Need some assistance ASAP – I saved my project and now the AVI files are missing –
Hello,
So, I was doing a live capture and had 7 clips in the project. I saved the project to an external harddrive and the internal on the laptop and when I came back to open it, it said the file could not be found. I have combed the entire laptop and I can’t find the avi files anywhere. I had shot a second group of clips the next day and saved that project the exact same way and the clips are in the folder where they should be. I’m at a loss as to where the first set could have gone. The project won’t open from the internal or external harddrive. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. This is for work and I’m rapidly losing time to come up with a solution. Thanks for your time.

Yes, I have. I see the icon on both harddrives, but they both say the file cannot be found.

When you save as, Check the box “Copy media” . The files should now still be on the original drive until you save this way.

As Danny says, it sounds like you just clicked on “Save”. This saves the project file (.veg) only. when you do a save, make sure the “Save Media” is checked, and a copy of the original media will be created. I personally don’t like this method because the copied media has a new cryptic filename and if you are going from an office computer to your home computer using this method, you will very quickly build a library of copies of the original media.
My method is to copy the original media once.
In Vegas you are NOT editing the media files. The .veg files contains all of your editing instructions and generated media. This is a strength of Vegas because multiple editors may collaborate on a project and as long as each workstation has a copy of the original media, all the editors need to do is exchange .veg files. (Small enough to be an email attachment).

Thanks. I did notice that check box after reviewing later. I didn’t check that for the second project and the avi files were saved for it. I guess my question now is – since I can’t go back to do that is there any way for me to restore that project. My understanding of how harddrives work, and I’m definitely not an expert but I know some really savvy people, is that if I didn’t delete the files they should be on the harddrive somewhere. We have run restore programs, undelete programs, and basically combed the harddrive in every manner possible and cannot find them anywhere. I did watch them, so I know they were on it at some point and I never deleted them, I just did the two saves. I’ve also been told even if I had deleted them they should still be there. I’m just really at a loss at this point. The only other option I know of is to have data recovery people go over the harddrive. I’m just really hoping there is some way to restore it through vegas.

Let me make sure that I understand what’s happened.
You did a capture and some editing on Computer “A”
You saved the project (xyz.veg)
You took the xyz.veg file home and opened it with Vegas on computer “B”, and it can’t find the media.Am I right so far?
You just need to go back to Computer “A” and copy te media files, or do a save-as and check the “copy media” box.
