Selection Tool (V) is locked as a a Rectangler (Q) mask tool
Posted by Joe Moya on May 9, 2009 at 4:34 amI can’t figure out how to get the selection tool to become a “selection tool” and not a rectangler mask tool. The only way to move a layer is use the Transform layer drop down…
This has only happening with particular project… is this a corrupt project file or is it something else?

May 9, 2009 at 10:28 amYou have to disselect the mask. Select the name of the leyer.
You will see that the mask will not be selected anymore, so you’ll be able to manipulate the layer, not the mask.Bartek Skorupa

May 9, 2009 at 2:36 pmThe problem is that there is no mask in the entire composition.
In fact, I copied the entire comp to a new comp within the same project… then, deleted all layers withing that newly created comp and the Selection Tool is still lock as a mask.
Another thing I noticed is that when I use this locked Selection tool, the border color is white… a typical (or default) mask border color is yellow. This white bordered mask can not be deleted… and, the only solution to removing this mask is File>Revert the project.
Also… I found out that if I create a mask using this locked Locked Section Tool, the Selection tool returns to “normal”. However, then when I use the mask tool or the shape creating tool… then, create a shape layer… I can not remove the shape created or any mask created.
It seems these two buttons (Selection Tool and Shape Tool) are inter-changeably locked and can not be deleted when used
Any one know what a White Bordered mask references? The preferences are defaulted so that the color of the mask is yellow and borders of the layers are suppose to match the layer color. I have no layer that is colored white in the project. Also, why would the Shape Tool and Selection tool be inter-locked in a fashion that prevents deletion of the mask and Selection tool becomes unlocked and useable but the masks can not be deleted with either Tool?

May 21, 2009 at 5:46 pmyeah I had the same problem. Even when I created a new empty comp with absolutely nothing in it, the selection tool was still locked as a rectangular masking tool. This is the only way I was able to get around this:
Create a new project
Create a new comp
Import your old project in the library.
Note that the imported project comps will still have the selection tool locked problem
however, if you copy&paste your layers into the new comp that you created earlier, the selection tool should go back to normal.it’s a hassle, i know, but hopefully someone will figure out an easier way when this glitch happens again
