I wanted to create a long movie from many small (2-10 minute) clips. I thought my solution might be of interest to others.

This is how I do it using DVD Architect Pro 5.2:

My movies consist of numerous small events e.g. birthdays, days out, local events, etc. The buttons on my menus link to playlists rather than to the video files themselves. All of my video clips are in the playlists i.e. 2009 clips are in the 2009 Playlist, 2010 clips in the 2010 Playlist etc. Clicking on the playlist button runs the selected playlist, and I am able to scan backwards and forwards in and out of each clip just as if it was one continuous video file.

I also have a ‘Play All’ playlist which does exactly as it says. It contains all the video clips in date order (I even have a 0.8 sec filler that goes between each clip). Unfortunately DVDA won’t let me drop one playlist into another playlist, so every clip has to be added manually to the ‘Play All’ playlist.

On my top level menu page I have a ‘Scene Selection’ button (just text) under each of the Playlist buttons. On these sub menus I have buttons for each scene (actually each video clip), but again it links to the playlist and not the video itself. When playing the disc, jumping in at say a mid-year clip, I can still navigate fully around the clips within the playlist.

I’m pleased with the result as I can modify a single clip, e.g. edit it, shorten or lengthen it, and I only have to rebuild the one file vs. an entire year of clips and then have to play around moving my subtitle text. Incidentally, I use the subtitle text for additional info about the clip e.g. clip date, location, the event, who’s who – very useful when passing on to relatives.

I also always add a marker 1.5 seconds from the end of the last clip of the year to make it quick to skip to the end of the movie and let it gracefully go back to the parent menu.
