Using trimmer
What is the best configuration to use trimmer. Here is the present set up but this leaves a lot to be desired.

The trimmer in Movie Studio 9 and prior is not a very useful tool. I hardly ever used it in those versions. The new trimmer in Movie Studio 10 and Vegas Pro 8,9,10 gives you a preview window much like the regular Vegas preview and is much more functional.
If you are serious about learning video editing, you really should be using the latest version of the software so that you get the latest benefits.

You can say that again. but I have a problem.
essentially what I bought not long ago were 2 crippled programs for $260 thinking I was getting the latest thing out from Sony. (from Office Depot) I knew I didn’t want to try to use the pirated sony vegas program available. But I knew I liked the system Sony had devised for movie editing. I’ve had cursory contact with Nero and other programs for a long time and didn’t think much of them. So when sony came along I liked what I saw and went with what it said it would do on the box. Do I want to bother with spending another 129 for the vegas 10 studio version (Office depot) and I don’t know even now if the trimmer in it has a preview window. Unless it says it does on the box as the guys at Office depot probably don’t know. On the other hand using Vegas 9 with it’s limitations is adequate to do the job just not as easy. I am working with home movies. Also I have glaucoma and will be blind sometime in the not too distant future so I can just do a hurry up job and stick with vegas 9. But on the bright side I cant take it with me so maybe spending it now would be for the best. Before making a decision I will have to see if Vegas 10 studio has a trimmer preview. Also check out Vegas 10 standard It is $99 it might also have a preview in trimmer. I don’t want to go online to get it if I decide to go that routeHave a nice day

I went to Office depot and the guy looked on line for answers to my question and couldn’t find anything on line. Trimmer yes but nothing about preview window. Thats for Vegas 10 standard and Vegas 10 studio version
Unless I can find out about the trimmer preview widow I will have to stick with what I have. The professional version was over 600 KaPow!

You can upgrade Movie Studio 9 to Movie Studio HD 10 for a lot less.

I don’t know how long ago it was but Vegas Movie Studio HD 10 was released in June of last year (2010). If Office Depot sold you Movie Studio 9 after that time, I would get my money back!

First, you should not buy the program for full price anymore. Now that you’re a customer you can get an upgrade directly from Sony for US$64.95
Second, I already said that Movie Studio 10 has a preview window for the trimmer and all you need to do is look at the Sony Movie Studio web page and you can see it for yourself.

That’s a good solution. I may go to Sony and upgrade.
does the upgrade also bring in Architect or do I have the same situation as it is in 9? I know when I bought the program I could have gotten it cheaper somewhere. But Office Depot is a couple blocks away and easy to reach so I will pay more to a certain extent for the convenience. I read where Office Depot is one of the businesses possibly going out of business because of problems.Hope to see you

Doyal, are you previewing on a separate monitor in Movie Studio? If not, then get the preview window so it’s docked separately to the trimmer window by clicking the video preview tab, then dragging the dots at the left of the preview pane to the right until the preview pane occupies its own space to the right of the trimmer’s docking area.
I think this is the default layout, with the video preview always visible. That leaves you less space for the trimmer, explorer etc, but you can always see either the output video (during preview or timeline editing), or the trimmer preview (when working in the trimmer).
I got used to this behaviour with the Movie Studio 9 trial, before buying version 10. I don’t really use the trimmer preview now, because the video preview doubles as trimmer preview (if you switch off the new trimmer preview).
The new trimmer preview sits above the trimmer video/audio strip, so it’s small unless you devote a fair bit of vertical space to the trimmer window.
