  • Rendered MP4 won’t stream in JWplayer while buffering

Posted by Hannah Jacobs on May 4, 2011 at 6:21 pm

I render MP4 videos to be watched online using the popular free player JWplayer, but when I render them in Vegas (I’m using Pro 9c) they don’t start streaming until it’s COMPLETELY buffered/loaded…

IE, my entire 150mb MP4 has to load completely before it’ll start playing. In the render options there are 3 different types of MP4, and “Maind Concept” and “Sony AVC” both say “Progressive” in their description:

    Main Concept AVC mp4
    Sony AVC (mp4, m2ts, avc)
    XDCAM EX (mp4)

I’ve tried rendering all 3 MP4 types with no luck. Is this a Vegas 9c glitch? Or is there a Render Option I’m accidentally not selecting that would fix this problem?

I’m really stuck here, and advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated! 🙂

You need to use MP4 FastStart. Just run the files through this free little utility and it should allow them to stream.

The problem is that Sony Vegas puts the meta data at the end, requiring your entire video to download before playing. It’s not JWplayer.

However, there are several FREE easy fixes. The one that I use is: Meta Data Mover.

Just google that and it’s the first result. It literally takes a second to run and your meta data is at the beginning of the video, allowing it to play instantly. You run it after you’ve rendered the .mp4 file.

Just to note, I don’t believe that the .mp4 method from vegas puts in h.264. What I do for that is render in .avi uncompressed or even in .wmv in high quality and then run it through handbrake (free) to get a h.264 mp4 file with the meta data at the beginning.

First, Update your version of Vegas to 9.0e, its free.
For all my renders geared for online viewing/streaming,
i use Video4YouTube, a free plugin from Vegasaur.

Thanks so much for the link to MP4 Fast Start, John. Hard to believe Vegas doesn’t do this automatically in the Pro version!!

I assumed it was an actual Vegas glitch I was experiencing. I’ve been doing this horrible double-render to render the final MP4 outside of Vegas… Quality loss, enormous interim file… It’s awful.

    Thanks again! 🙂

Steve, I haven’t heard of Video4Youtube or Vegasaur, will check it out, thanks a LOT.

    PS – I do have 9.e installed, I just checked again… “e” looks like “c” to me apparently when I’m in a hurry. 🙂

The utilities mentioned in this thread are for people using Windows, I’m using a Mac. Does anyone know of a utility that will work for me? Thanks in advance.

How are you running Vegas Pro on a Mac without Windows? These utilities are for people using Vegas Pro 9.0. If you have Vegas Pro 12.0 you don’t need them anymore because Vegas Pro 12.0 can make the file ready for streaming.

    Hi John,
I didn’t realize this thread was only for people running Windows. It seems that I’m having the same issue as the original poster, the index files are at the back-end of the video so it will not start in the JWPlayer until fully loaded. I start with a .mov file that I’ve tried converting in both Handbrake and Miro to an .mp4 and a .m4v file but neither starts playing ’til fully loaded

Googling does not turn up anything that will swap the index file to the front that opens/works with my operating system OS X 10.5.8. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well… this is the Vegas Pro forum and Vegas Pro only runs on Windows so chances are everyone here is running Windows.

Handbreak has a checkbox for Web optimized. Have you tried that?
