video capture frustration!
Posted by John Thompson on May 4, 2011 at 5:03 pmI’m trying to get Vegas to capture video from a 8mm video camera. Unfortunately, vegas will NOT work with the capture interface I have. I tried a pinnacle dazzle before I realized it doesn’t work with windows 7, and now I’m trying a “Startech” video capture cable that tigerdirects website said was win 7 compatible. However, when I have everything installed and hookup, and try to capture video, I get “The USB2821 device could not be opened”.
Exactly what DOES work with vegas 10 without breaking the bank?

May 4, 2011 at 5:17 pm“Capture” only works with Firewire connections. Your 8mm video camera was likely built before Firewire was invented. Come to think of it, how are you connecting the camera to the PC? If via USB, then use the software that came with the camera.
I’ve never used the Pinnacle Dazzle, preferring the AVCHD-300, but I am not surprised that it won’t work with Windows 7 since the product is owned by Avid, and Avid has pretty much abandoned Pinnacle product support. The Dazzle was made way before Windows 7 and when Avid bought Pinnacle, a lot of Pinnacle engineers left the company.
See if there is a Windows Vista driver. Most Vista drivers will work with Windows 7. Failing that, look for an AVCHD-100 or AVCHD-300 on eBay. (Note to me: test the ACHD on Win 7).

May 4, 2011 at 5:24 pmAnother alternative is to find an old miniDV camcorder that has the pass-through feature (analog in – firewire out).
The tape drive doesn’t have to be working, just the electronics.
If you don’t have a firewire card for your computer, you can buy one for less than $25. -

May 4, 2011 at 6:58 pmI have the Canopus ADVC-300 like Stephen but you can probably get away with using the ADVC-55 since you’ll only be capturing. Along the lines of what Mike suggested, I believe there was a Digital-8 camcorder that also played Hi8 tapes. These might allow you to capture via firewire as well.
BTW, Pinnacle hardware was always proprietary. It only worked with their software and that’s the way Pinnacle liked it.

May 4, 2011 at 7:19 pmPlaying with it a bit, if I unplug and plug the USB cord while in I have Sony video capture on, it recognizes it briefly, then gives the same message.
I did not know about the firewire only compatibility.
Right now, I have the software that came with the cord, and will see if it works well enough to get it to DVD, and will also look at whats out there for firewire capture gear.

What make and model is your video camera? Might help us advise you properly, as 8mm cameras generally do not have USB connections.
Such cameras typically used a 1394 or firewire connection. How are you doing your capture? Take us through the steps.
Lastly, are you running a firewall? Some firewalls block the DV capture program that Vegas uses (vidcap60.exe).
Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

May 5, 2011 at 6:38 pmMy 8mm camera is a late 90’s (I think) sony. The only outputs are the video and audio (mono) phono type jacks. It’s the only way to transfer the video to anything else. I used to just copy it directly to DVD, but that recording DVD player gave up, and I am looking to copy directly to the PC via a phono/USB adapter. Barring that, I’m looking to burn DVD via the PC using the same cable setup, then edit in Vegas.
When I tried to get it into vegas, I have the camera on, all cables plugged in, vegas running, and click on “video capture”, chose the DV option, and the transfer program comes on and tells me the adapter is off. As I mention, it does briefly see the USB adapter if I unplug and plug it in.

May 7, 2011 at 1:42 pmSounds a lot like one of my cameras John – and I’ve never managed to get the Vegas capture tool to work with it. Instead I use a separate capture application (VirtualDub) and capture using the Lagarith codec which seems to give a reasonable file size and quality.
My setup has a blackmagic intensity card though and I use the S-Video output from the camera and the phono for the audio.
Hope that helps!
