  • Render Times with AMD X3 720 – might buy Quad Core

Posted by Mike Yoneda on April 25, 2011 at 8:39 am

I have a AMD X3 720 Triple Core (2.8 GHz) on an Asus M3A78-EM motherboard with 4 GB of RAM. I am running Windows XP Home Edition and Vegas Pro 9.0, Version 9.0e.

When I render a HD HQ m2ts file of 40 minutes in length, it takes 60 minutes to render. If I get a Quad Core AMD, wiil it significantly improve my render times?

If so, do you have any suggestions on a good AMD Quad Core? Also, for a Triple Core or Quad Core, what should I set the “Maximum Number of Rendering Threads” to?

I would expect the quad core to process faster, especially if the clock speed is faster.
However, your motherboard band width, amount and speed of memory are probably more important.
My 2x AMD has consistently beat my 4x Intel because of the motherboard and memory.

Start by upgrading to 64 bit windows 7 & 64 bit Vegas and more ram first, as it more effectively uses all available ram. But I don’t think you will see radically better times. U don’t mention the speed of your drives, which could be a bottleneck. If I remember right, rendering seemed to be drive and ram intensive. I think I am about a 1:1 rendering relationship, but to be honest, it’s been some months since I checked. However, going from 60 to 40 might seem worth the cost. I’ll check my thread settings later. Maybe John will be on before then.

See if your motherboard supports the Phenom X2 hexacore chips…if so there are REALLY fast, my rendering times REALLY were reduced. Also, 64bit Windows 7 is awesome, I also agree that you would see a good benefit with going that way as well.

I am currently rendering a 5:30 video with no transcoded footage and the rendering time appears to be 11 minutes total, start to finish. That means Vegas is having to process raw AVCHD and Canon 7D MOV files simultaneously. With transcoded footage, I assume that will be faster. All 8 cores are engaged, some more than others, highest is about 40%. Disk IO is pegged, so that will be what I would look at for any kind of upgrades, though I am running on 7200 drives now, so the next step is into solid state.

So upgrading your processor may or may not make a difference, if your footage is not transcoded, and your drives are slow (i.e. 5400). Maybe just upgrading RAM and your drives will solve your problem.
