Interlaced/progressive on new TV’s
OK so here is my dilemma, I do spots and tags for national TV all source footage is from Beta SP.
My issue is that people preview the spots on computer, however they are run on TV stations all over the US, when they preview these spots on the computer, when I deliver in an interlaced NTSC MPEG 2 format, it shows scrolling type as blurry, when I give them a progression version they say it looks 100% better. My conundrum is this, are the modern LCD and LED TV’s dealing with interlacing the same way as the old CRT’s? Is it better to deliver to the stations in progressive or interlaced formats (MPEG 2 NTSC 4:3)? Obviously new 720p & 1080p models are able to deal with progressive, but what about 1080i and others who are using CRT? I have a few stations that are firm in the requirements even in as far as desiring upper or lower fields for interlaced, but others do not seem to care…..any thoughts or help here?Thanks

All TV’s support interlaced. As far as I know all SD broadcast are interlaced. I see no reason not to deliver interlaced for broadcast. If your customers want to view on a PC, give them a DVD copy. All DVD players will deinterlace the video properly so it should look just as good as your progressive version. I can’t say the same for all media players.
Is there a problem with delivering two formats? One progressive for PC viewing and one interlaced for broadcast? If they want to watch the actual file that will be broadcast then just recommend that they should be careful to use a player that will correctly deinterlace the footage.

I get a flat rate per tag, so it would be double the render and upload time for the same rate….so I just wanted to make sure progressive is good for stations, there are weeks I am doing 15 tags and have enough issue with doing things twice or more for little tweaks DVD’s would be a total PITA….thanks for the input…

I would say render/deliver in Progressive but like you said some stations require interlaced. Sometimes de interlacing will cause a jitter on faster motion when played back on stations that air in interlaced. So it’s a catch 22. But I would suggest final render Progressive based on what you told me. We have that same issue here all the time and sometimes the spot dictates what we deliver.

Stations will usually give you very strict details about what they want and that’s what you need to deliver. You usually don’t get a choice. I’ve never seen them ask for progressive since all TV’s are interlaced and all of their equipment expects interlaced. I would ask if they can ingest progressive before sending it.

Sounds good and that was what I expected. I am working through an agency and sometimes I know the “standards” for each station and sometimes I do not. Mostly I get an order with no requirements of video other than MPEG, AVI or MPEG 2…

Almost all services such as Extreme Reach and DG systems,which supply files to all stations nationally require ntsc interlaced,720p60 and 1080i 59.94 interlaced… If you supply spots outside of that realm they will be inferior and probably rejected due to the fact that they well be reprocessed after you submit them. They will be expecting those specs and if they differ then when they process them you will loose resolution due to unnecessary deinterlacing/interlacing..

Thanks for the input, these are NOT HD quality as the spots and running footage I work with are all from BETA SP, don’t ask me why, but that is what these dealers have…
So what do these services require for SD 720×480(486) interlaced or progressive?Thanks

Standard Def 720×486 / interlaced / bottom field first.
1.Uncompressed with uncompressed audio 48 .mov or .avi
2.H264.mov interlaced/ bottom field first /8000k / aac audio 48
“watch out for raised gamma level”
3.mpeg2 720×486 422 10000k audio at 48.
720×480 not acceptable.HD is either 1080i 59.94 for some stations or 720 60 for other
stations. Usually ProRes HQ.mov files or MPEG 2 at 35000 k audio at 48.
Some accept avid hddnx codec too. Can be station specific. -

I believe you’ll find that all SD broadcasters are expecting interlaced footage. That’s the broadcast standard for SD.
