  • Playback issue with seeking/skipping through file

Posted by Jose Fernandez on April 1, 2011 at 5:58 am

Hey guys let me describe the situation here so it can be fully grasped. When playing MP4 files trying to skip/seek ahead into the video causes it to pause for about a minute(or more depending on the length of the video) before it resumes playing where I clicked in the video. Im not sure how to explain that. It happens using multiple players so I’ve sort of confirmed its not a player issue (VLC included). Also, it ONLY happens with the MP4s that I create using Sony Vegas 9.

More specifically, I record footage at 1280x720p @ 13,000,000kbps on m2ts format. That original and very large file I might add, skips through instantly with almost no delay. After editing, I then render the file using Sony Vegas 9.0 using Mainconcept AVC/AAC @ 2,000,000 kbps. The output file is a very nice looking product of the original at a fraction of the size. However when it comes time for playback and skipping through the file it takes forever to do.

Heres my specs though I doubt this has anything to do with it.
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.88 (overclocked)GHz
    2 GB of RAM
Windows XP SP3 up to date with all the updates.
    Nvidia GeForce 7950 GT
I’ve got the CCCP (codec packs) and perhaps a handful more installed from other players like the Core Player, VLC etc.

Also, its worth mentioning that I I can load up a 10 GB M2TS video file and skip through it with no problem, but I cant load up 200 MB MP4 I’ve made without waiting a minute for it to resume. It may also happen with other video files I make out of SV but it takes so long to render things that its honestly not worth the time.

Help please I wouldn’t even know where to begin on troubleshooting this. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 🙂

The greater compression requires greater horsepower to decode, for one thing. Additionally, it may be the way the frames are sequenced.
Remember, Vegas is not a media player. It is an editor. It is designed as a tool that modifies frames. Therefore, it needs to buffer up more information. Higher vs lower compression ratios can cause issues.

Right, however I’m not referring to using Vegas as a media player.. I’m using media players as players (generally core player and VLC), and only files I create with Vegas have a tremendous pause or a complete stop when I skip or seek through it. Other MP4s I download through the net which must have a similar type of compression to achieve excellent quality in a low amount of size don’t have any lag what so ever. Which leads me to believe that Vegas is doing something extra to my files. I’d love to get more input on this. 🙂

I thought I had read that there were problems with indexing / skipping through MP4 files with either the Sony AVC or MainConcept AVC codec (maybe both?). I know when I render with Sony AVC for the web, I have to run it through MP4 FastStart so that it will stream from the web. I’m not sure if this is all part of the same indexing problem but there may not be anything that you’re doing wrong. It just may be how the file is written. I would try running the file through MP4 FastStart and see if it helps? (it can’t hurt)

I had my hopes up John. But to no avail, I ran a couple of videos through the Mp4 Faststart and non exhibited any signs of improving their ability to seek through. I have a youtube channel where I upload all my videos. Once they are up there I’m sure youtube runs them through some sort of cruncher as they do change in both quality and brightness/contrast settings, seeking through them works just fine. However I guess thats just the nature of online video streaming (in that it works flawlessly through youtube). Any other ideas?

Sorry that didn’t work. I have no problems seeking through the MP4 videos that I create with Sony AVC so I can’t imagine what the problem might be. Most of my tutorials are around 15 minutes (the YouTube max) and I can jump to any part of them on my PC in the Windows Media Player and they start playing immediately.
