5.1 Audio problems
Hi all,
I seem to be having a common problem and haven’t found a solution for it yet. I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 and HD video from a Sony HDR-SR11 Handycam (1920 x 1080i). I would like to format the audio to 5.1 in DVD Architect but have had zero luck. I either get no surround at all or what sounds like almost all sound out of my right channel only. In Vegas Project Properties, I have the following Audio settings Master Bus: 5.1, Bit Depth: 16, Sample Rate: 44,100 (???), Resample & Stream: Best.
Video: Template – HD 1080-60i (1920×1080, 29.970 fps), Frame rate – 29.970 (NTSC), Pixel Aspect Ratio – 1.3333 (HDV 1080)
In the Vegas timeline, I can “see” all channels (Front, Rear, Center) have sound in them.
In DVD Architect, for File, Properties, I choose Video Format: (NTSC Widescreen 720×480 (There isn’t a choice for 1080) Audio Format: AC-3 5.1 Surround. On the timeline, the audio looks to be: right side, main audio tracks, left side: surround sound, and that seems to be what comes out of the speakers when I play the DVD.
I have tried many other combinations but none of met with any success. The DVD Architect root menu etc. looks great and I have LOVED every minute working with Sony Vegas, I only wish there was a way to create the DVD right in Sony Vegas so the sound and video came out correctly. I have done a terrible job at figuring this out but if anyone knows how and could give step by step instruction on what my settings need to be, I would greatly appreciate it. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you’re my only hope.

You should set your sample rate to 48K. This is what is used for video.

Did you modify the default template because that is wrong. 1920×1080 should have a Pixel Aspect Ratio of 1.000. You would only use 1.3333 for 1440×1080.
How are you rendering? Are you creating a separate video file and audio AC3 file in Movie Studio that is then used to DVD Architect? Are you using the Make Movie button? A little more info on what workflow you’re using might reveal where things are going wrong.

Thanks for responding John. I think I’ve tried so many different iterations that I got myself upside down with my settings. I don’t remember a “Make Movie” button (Vegas or Architect?)I used “Make DVD” I believe. I did create a separate AC3 file and then dragged and dropped into Architect but when I played the DVD, I got mega sound from the right front, little sound from the left front, and no sound from the surround speakers. My stack of blank DVDs is quickly turning into a stack of coasters. Whatever the settings are to make a quality video from .m2ts files with 5.1 sound, I’ll take anything I can get. Whatever video quality I’ve been getting (not even sure what the numbers on it would be) is fine so I’m really trying to fix the sound. Thanks in advance to anyone responding, I certainly appreciate your help.

I just tried duplicating your workflow and got the same results. 🙁 The audio AC3 file in DVD Architect Studio has a much louder right track than left track and while the track header does seem to look like it should be 5.1 surround, I only see two tracks. Unfortunately, I don’t have any surround equipment to test this on. So right now… I can confirm your results but can’t tell you how to get a proper 5.1 surround DVD made (sorry).

Thanks for your time and trouble anyway John. I guess it’s back to the ol’ drawing board as they say.
