I have an idea for a project and wonder if there is a fairly easy way to make it happen in Vegas Pro 10.

I want to track how many items a group has distributed since the start of the organization.

For instance in their first decade they distributed 10,000 items. In the second decade another 25,000 were distributed all the way their 100 year anniversary with a total of 1.4 billion distributed.

Is there an easy way to set this up to count up in the middle of the screen. Let’s say I allow one minute per decade. In the first minute it counts from 1 to 10,000, in the second minute it continues to count to 35,000 and so on until it reaches the end of the 10th minute at 1.4 billion.
I guess on another layer I would have a horizontal line with a notation of each decade and a cursor or whatever would track across the line to show at what point in the history of the organization the distribution count was at.

Hopefully that is a fairly clear description of the idea. So, is there an easy way to do it?

I believe that Boris Graffiti has the ability to generate all sorts of counters. You might want to download the trail and see if it will do what you want.

One idea to do this entirely with Vegas would be to create a project and set the frame rate to 100 fps. Then drop a Timecode FX onto an empty event and set the preset to Absolute Frames. This would create a counter that counts up rather quickly (100 per second to be exact). Mask the decimal numbers and render for as long as you need. You can then drop this into your main project and speed it up as needed to fit your 1 minute per decade.

John, how do you do this?
In Project Properties, I only see double PAL and NTSC so I don’t know how you’d set it to 100 fps.
My guess is that the 4″ of snow we got this morning (everything had melted – again) has clouded my brain cells so my apologies if the solution is staring me in the face 🙂

Just type 100 in the entry field. (It is a drop-down entry field so you can change it.) 100 is the highest it will accept.

    Thanks John.
Time to buy some of those “brain booster” pills that I keep getting ads for 🙂

Actually, it’s an extremely poor design on Microsoft’s part to have a widget with multiple purposes that confuses customers as to whether they can type in it or not. The difference is just too subtle.

Sorry to just now be responding – Thanks John for the help. I’ll give your suggestion a try when this project finally comes up. Waiting on additional info from the group I’m working with…
