  • Vegas 10 – Major Issues.

Posted by Dave Roberts on March 8, 2011 at 4:52 pm

After loving Vegas 8 & 9, assumed Vegas 10 was a no brainer so spent my cash and couldn`t wait to install it. My excitement, is one of sheer frustration now. Straight from the off, it has caused issues. I shall explain, but before, here`s my spec – Intel Quad Core Q6600, 8GB Ram, Geforce 8600GT with Raid 0 and seperate OS disks, W7 64bit, Vegas 10 64bit.

    1) Lagging on preview. With only a few clips on the timeline, I hit play to preview, and it waits, and waits, and might play within ten seconds if I`m lucky. Have changed settings down to minimal, but still it`s pot luck if it plays. 8 and 9 were instant. Has made it ununsable.

    2) Randomly changing clips!! Amazing this one. First time assumed it was me, but it has done it 3 times now. I`m editing, multiple lines and I noticed it`s changed a clip! The event name (file name) is correct, but look a at properties and it`s a different file name.

    3) No way to remove the event preview. Previously in 8 and 9 it was View\Wave Forms and Frames.

I have used Vegas for 4 years now, so know my way around quite well. I have changed almost every setting available, uninstalled/installed but still the same. I`m at a loss to solve the above, so I`ve conacted Sony Creative Software for help.

If anyone has any bright ideas please let me know, or it would also be nice to know if others are having the same issues.

Thanks in advance, and I fell better now…

    Dave

Are you using the latest 10c version? Make sure you have the latest. I’m not noticing any difference in preview lag between 10c and 9e.

I’ve read about others having this problem. It hasn’t happened to me but make sure you report it to Sony.

View | Waveforms and frames (Ctrl+Shift+W) is still in my version of Vegas Pro 10c. Not sure why you aren’t seeing it. Try Ctrl+Shift+W anyway and see.

    1. Download the Sony Vegas Pro 10.0c demo Sony Creative Software downloads
to see if that will work problem-free on your system.

    2. Try installing it on another computer if you can, that will eliminate any hardware issues.

Dave, I got your first two same symptoms a few weeks ago. Part of my problem (the lag) was a new AJA board Vegas didn’t like, so I switched it out with a DeckLink card. The other part of it was trying to play MOV files. I don’t think Vegas likes MOV files very much, even though they say it supports them. I don’t have lag problems when I replace all my MOVs with AVIs.

As to your other issue (randomly replacing files with different ones), I get that sometimes as well. So far it’s only been with audio, but I’d like to know what’s going on with that as well…

Just for future reference (and to eliminate Internet myths)… QuickTime MOV files are just a container for video using a variety of codecs. Vegas has no problem with MOV files. It’s the codec used by the video inside the MOV file that can cause problems. Just like a codec inside an AVI file can cause problems. MOV and AVI are just containers. They are like a “brown paper bag”… it’s what you place in the bag that determines whether you’ll have problems or not. I use QuickTime files every day in my workflow and have no problems with them.

For what it’s worth, I also noticed the phenomenon of switched clips in Vegas 10c yesterday (it actually transposed an AVI file for an M2TS file).

I’ve suffered with Vegas losing its link to external files on a random basis through several versions now, but this was a new one.

I have had this occur several times, and I edit only in HDV m2t files. It is always in the same spot and even after fixing it, reverts the change to the same rogue clip. It has affected both video and audio for me, but only on a few projects (so far). I also observed that the changes would ‘stick’ when simply restarting Vegas, but if I restarted the PC or dismounted and remounted the disc without a PC restart, the rogue clip would reappear. Saving as a new Veg file or version does not help.

It has gotten to the point to which I have to render the clip to an HDV intermediary and then continue editing with that. It’s a pain in the proverbial, but this is the only work around until 10d is released… .

As Vegas was not crashing, I have not reported it to Sony. Don’t know how to, actually. I tradionally only do so if I get a crash dump report, but if nothing is crashing…

    Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

“As Vegas was not crashing, I have not reported it to Sony”

This seems to be happening more and more on several Vegas forums so I’d definitely report it in the hopes that Sony can figure out what’s going on and come with a cure.

Reporting back on original problem with bad lagging, I think I may have sussed my issue. I have a USB speaker switching unit so I can switch between different computers. Now, in Vegas 8 and 9 I was allowed to edit without sound quite happily. This would be the case if I was adding a lot of text etc, and needed music to keep me motivated!!

In 10, it doesn`t like the sound being ‘switched out’, so hence the bad lag. Only a minor nuisance to me, must be something different in 10 to cause this. Not sure if this would ever help anyone, but that`s my observations.

BUT, the event swapping out is still active, and appears to be the same shots it keeps exchanging. Definately a bug, as event title on the timeline says correct file name, Properties reports back a completely different media event!! Have reported to Sony.

Thank you for the posts, I’m thinking of upgrading from VP9, and till the “bugs” are worked out, I’ll wait a bit longer!
