I just got a new camera and it’s making it impossible for me to edit HD video from my camera because of all the lag in Sony Vegas 9.0.

System Specs:
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce 8400 GS
Chip Type: Geforce 8400 GS
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
Approx. Total Memory: 512mb

OS: Windows XP
System Model: Dell DV051
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1014 MB RAM
Page File: 1116mb used, 1759 available
DirectX Version: 9.0

Is there something I need to buy to get rid of this? please respond!

What make/model camera?

Vegas Pro 9 or Vegas Movie Studio 9?

Your two options are to buy a more powerful QuadCore computer, or convert the video to a format that is easier for Vegas to edit on your current computer.

I agree with John. Your system is underpowered for high definition video editing quite a few areas: insufficient RAM, underpowered CPU and underpowered video card. I would suspect it is not cost effective to upgrade your system.

You could convert your files to a lossless intermediary format (I once had someone who used Edius to convert my files to HQ-AVI), but doing it yourself on your own system might defeat the purpose of being able to edit quickly.

It’s actually not HD video. All video since I got my new computer (improved) has lagged in sony vegas.

I don’t know anything about that Samsung Flashcam u10, but a Google search says it is HD footage. It’s most likely a difficult codec to edit, so as suggested, converting it would help. Also, your specs say you only have 1GB of RAM. I would increase your RAM by installing 4GB, however XP will only recognize up to 3GB. This should also help.

This is typical of $99 HD cameras. The format they use is meant for shooting and uploading to YouTube without editing. If you want to edit it, you should convert it to a more editable format.

If you only have 1GB of memory that is seriously inadequate. Get at least 4GB if you plan to edit HD.

One thing to try and run one of the files through AviDemux and convert it to Motion JPEG with PCM audio and see if that edits easier. Here are the parameters to use:

Hi Will.
I am running Vegas 10. Editing in HD mode directly from the SD card.
I have the same problem of severe Lag when running in realtime. The Timeline is Ok but running the edit is VERY jerky.
My PC setup is Foxcom mother board, Intel Dualcore 1.8G. ATI Gforce 3450 (512 meg). 3 gig of DDR 2 ram.

If I edit CVBS (Video) it runs ok but the required speed is much slower. The video quality is poor (VHS) compared with HD edits I have seen.

So its a trip to the PC shop. ASUS Main board, Quad core Intel 3Gig. 4 gig of DDR3 and a 1GIG ATI card. I will let you know if it fixes the problems.

Try copying the media to your hard drive where it can be accessed faster.

That is way below spec for HD editing which requires a minimum 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo.

The QuaddCore is a good idea (hopefully a Core i7/i5) but the ATI graphics card is a bad idea. Most video editing applications, including Sony Vegas, support GPU acceleration via NVIDIA CUDA technology. You want an NVIDIA card for video editing not ATI.

You’re right. I have a bad habit of editing directly from the SD card. But I don’t think that will fix the problem.
