  • Better processor or more ram? What’s better for After Effects?

Hey, I’m building a new computer soon and I’m on a pretty limited budget, though I’m trying to get the best of what I can so here’s my few choices basically:

    Phenom II X4 955 BE (4 Cores at 3.2) 4GB of ram
    Phenom II X3 720 (3 Cores at 2.8) 8GB of ram

now I’m going to be paying the same no matter what I pick here, but I’m just wondering which one After Effects would benefit more in.

btw I’m not building it just for After Effects, but that’s the program I only really have horrible performance issues in now.

Since you’re not building up just for AE, I would stick with your second option. If you’re going to use AE with multiprocessing, AE uses for each thread (in this case 3) at least 0.5GB. So, the more RAM the better. Also, there’s nothing worse and more annoying than having your hard drive trying to do the job that you’re RAM is supposed to. IMO. Hope this helps. Good luck.

    Best regards.

You want a lot of processing power with after effects. I would get the quad core system because memory is really cheap and you can easily put more in down the line. Its not quite as easy to do with the processor.

You need both Ram and processing power, but you need the CPU power a bit more for working inside of AE. I use a Mac Pro with dual quad cores and 12Gb of memory and it runs like a dream compared to the Dell I was running before.

yep, i would lean towards faster processors and more cores. ram is cheap and far easier to upgrade later. with ae cs3 and up, with multiprocessing you enabled, ae can use up to 4gb per core, so you could utilize as much as 16gb on the 4-core system… however, i’ve found 2gb/core to work quite well….

note that you will also need a 64-bit os to access more that 4gb of ram.
