Hello, I’m completely frustrated. I have been trying for hours and couldn’t learn this technique correctly. Even saw a few tutorials.

What I have in my project is a camera that points at a map from the top, then moves closer and rotates, zooms back, zooms in, follows lines that are being drawn (write on) in various directions. It’s perfect until I want to zoom back to the original view, it completely messes up everything.

So basically, I move in, follow the arrows across the map, perform all kinds of tricks with the camera, moving it back and forth etc, but then when it’s time to set the last keyframe to get back to the original viewpoint it destroys everything. (I tried using “reset” the camera and it gets back to where I want it (with keyframe lock activated so it creates a new one) but still messes up)

I have tried using that null object I saw in some tutorials but can’t really learn to use it properly either for this purpose.

Can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong? Thank you

After setting the last set of keyframes are the middle section messed up or just the towards the end?

I removed the camera movements yesterday, I’ll try to make a simple small example and upload it so you can see what messes up.

Ok so I finally learnt how to orbit with the camera properly and be able to get back to initial view without distorting the rest of the transition by using null object

The problem I had with null objects was that when I moved Z for the null object, the camera effectively zoomed into the map, and the null object went through the map to a plane behind, but after that, correctly aiming to the right spot in the map was almost impossible, plus Depth of field would have been impossible.

The workaround was Zoom itself from the camera, just zoomed in and then everything else relied on the null object values, including orientation, which worked perfect. I don’t exactly know why the camera alone couldn’t do the job by itself, because it was all perfect until I had to zoom out, but I imagine it has something to do with the point of interest being unknown. But anyway, some videotutorial said it’s buggy to work without null objects so I guess that’s what I’m gonna save 😀

Btw, this probably goes into the “basics” area, but didn’t realise it was there until now.
