  PSD Maddness!

  Hey guys!

  So back in the good old days when I didn’t understand anything, I figured why not comprise my After Effects animations with two dozen monster sized PSD layers.

  I know better now, though I would love to go back and play with my old demo reel. The problem still remains though, that the layers are so massive that it bogs down my whole system.

  QUESTION: Is there any way to scale my PSD file that contains all animated layers, but without causing absolute madness in my After Effects file? When shrinking my PSD, the corresponding elements in AE become a random cyclone of garbage

  Thanks for any help guys! I fear the worst, though…

  YOu have two options when importing PSD files as comps. One is to retain each layer’s size ad teh other is to conform each layer to the document size. Not too sure which one you’ve selected, so try the other.

  A workaround is to splice up the image into smaller layers and then use a parented Null to control the spliced up layers. You may also want to resize the images to ensure that they are optimally sized for your needs.

  YOu can view a layer’s scale in terms of percentage (default) or pixels. Transform the layer as you want and then view the scale in terms of pixels to give you an exact idea as to how big your layer needs to be without over taxing the system.

  That’s awesome for the future. Will keep all that in mind. However, for cracking into the old AE files…

  without RE-animating entire sequences… is there no way to scale down my PSD so AE isn’t grabbing monster files? Without disrupting the animation?

  I’m assuming that the bigger the PSD the slower AE will go.

  Do the view scale by pixels thingy aannresze accordingy in PS. hnreplace the old layers withh the new ones. I can’ be certain if this wlll work seamlessly though – best to tyr it out on a piecemeal basis.

  You should also look into areas where you can use a parented Null to move a group of layers, to reposition them into place.
