    Hi everyone,,
    I have 6 movie clips of which 4 are 23.97 & 2 are 29.97
I have a movie project comp that has 6 clips. The first clip is shot at 29.97 frames, the 2nd,3rd & 4th are 23.97 frames. and the last clip is 29.97. see my problem?
All clips have to be motion tracked. I’m afraid that mixing the two frame rates on 1 project setting are going to screw up my motion tracks. What is the best way to correct this?
For example, Do I make a project @ 29 frames and put the 2 clips (29.97) in it.
Then, motion track it & past it into the other project file of 23.97 and render it out?
If I do, isn’t that the same thing as leaving them all on one project comp? Doesn’t the pasted comp now run slower on the 23 frame comp? I am so confused!!!

What would you do? …and don’t say…. “I would have shot everything in 23.976.”
I know, I know.. I screwed up, I shot “behind the scenes” footage while they where filming and the director liked my 2 shot angles better than his footage. So now I have Mixed frame rates!
    Thanks,
    Lou

i would work on each clip separately with it’s native frame rate. do all your motion tracking and compositing for each one, then render them out as 29.97 (for the 24p comps, just set the render settings add the pulldown).

then all your clips will be 29.97,and it will be easier to edit them together.

otherwise you’re looking at a tedious process (or rather costly, if you buy new software) to convert your 29.97 to 24p. and keep in mind that will involve interpolated news frames, which you then want to motion track…. so you are hoping for very accurate interpolation to get a good track.

[Dave LaRonde] “I got the notion that the guy wanted a film frame rate”

he might want that… but unless this is for film, i don’t see any reason to try and go 23.976 at this point… of course we know that i almost never see going with 24p at any point (save a film transfer or easier pal conversion). 😉

    Hi Guys,
Wow, now you just opened up a can of worms.
Ok, this is what i found out… The camera (Canon HV20) when I captured into cs4, although I shot it in 24p mode, Canon hv20 added the extra frames to 29.976. (I did not know that) I thought it was film as 29.976. I thought I forgot to switch it to 24p. So, what I did was Press GUESS 24A PULLDOWN in AE, and when I scrubed thru, I had not still frames. (Every frame has movement.) I don’t know what is going to happen when I send it back to cs4.
Anyway, you raised another question…. Maybe another topic….
All fooage that was shot with Canon’s XHA1 was in 24p mode.
Shouldn’t I work in 24 frames in cs4 & AE? The movie is going to be shown in Film festivals so I’m guessing DVD to projection screens?
So are you saying I am working in the wrong frame rate?
Why would I want to convert it to 29 frame? Doesn’t it convert automatically when you rendering it?
    Thanks so much,
    Lou

the canon hv20 is the camera you shot your footage on…? if, so this is good news. by choosing ‘guess pulldown’ in ae, you’ve removed converted the footage back to 24p (if it was shot that way). whenever you shoot 24 to tape, and about half the time when you shoot to file, it will always add a pulldown and record at 29.97. that’s the ntsc standard, and that’s just how it works. so to get back to 24p, you need to remove the pulldown.

so, if your footage is 24p and the other footage is 24p, then keep everything 24p. since you are going to dvd, you won’t need to worry about adding a pullldown back in (hence progressive dvds for films).

your workflow has gotten much smoother…

I know the hv20 has a 24p mode where it records with pulldown so you should be able to GUESS 24A PULLDOWN and it will say effective framerate 23.976 and work with both camera footage in same comp and motion tracking should work perfect with no interlaced lines anywhere.

DVD’s then add a pulldown again to get 29.97i for TV’s either in AE’s render fields pulldown or a DVD authoring program.

sorry Kevin, I did’t hit refresh and I seemed to have accidentally rehash your post.

    HI chris,
I just did a Capture test with both XHA1 & HV20 footage, the XHA1 properties said 23.976 but the HV20 said 29.976. The HV20 was set to 24 mode and also the XHA1. Are you saying that there’s a setting on the camera to make it come in at 23.976?
    Thanks,
    Lou

Capture normal Premiere 29.97 or buy cineform which removes the pulldown as it captures. After effects just removes the pulldown back to 23.976.
