  Exporting from Sony Vegas for Sony DVD Architect

  Hi!

  I’ve been unlucky with authoring my Blu-Rays in Sony DVD Architect Pro 5.2.

  Here’s my workflow, maybe someone’s got an advice for me:

  RAW AVCHD shot at 25fps progressive (1920×1080) @ ~ 17Mbps
  Using the following template for my video in Sony Vegas Pro 10.0c (Build 470) 64-bit:

  MainConcept MPEG-2
  Blu-ray 1920×1080-24p, 25 Mbps video stream
  Here’s what I changed in the template
  Video Quality to “31”
  set the bitrate to 17Mmbps CBR
  Use closed GOPs (Length of GOPs: All Short)
  Video Rendering quality: Best

  Starting a new Blu-Ray project with the following settings in Sony DVD Architect Pro 5.2:
  MPEG-2 1920×1080-24.000p, 16:9
  AC-3 Stereo

  No errors in the Make Blu-Ray disc Wizard. The only weird thing is that DVDA always re-encodes my AC-3 Stereo

  audio, no matter if it’s rendered as Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio or Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro. The video is always ok.

  No errors during the making of the Blu-Ray either.
  If I use PCM audio (16 bit 48kHz) everything’s ok- no messages at all- nothing needs to be re-encoded.

  Now when I try to mount the resulting image from DVDA with Daemon Tools I can’t play it in Power DVD 10, nor

  ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 5.It always says “unsupported disc format…”

  My DVDA project has 3 menus. I don’t mix Dolby Digital AC-3 with PCM audio in my project. I don’t have any

  background movies in the menus. No animation. Nothing. Just one movie file with the according audio. Some chapters

  and that’s it. Filename of audio and video track always the same too.

  What’s weird again. I’ve succesfully authored a Blu-Ray (only one Blu-Ray) with the same template in Vegas/DVDA and

  it worked. (audio was PCM though, which I’ve tried with this project, but it didn’t work)

  Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

  Since your source is AVCHD I would not use MPEG2 on Blu-ray, I would use AVCHD instead. In Vegas Pro render your video as Sony AVC with the Blu-ray 1920×1080-50i, 16 Mbps video stream template. Then render your audio as Dolby Digital AC3 with the appropriate template. DVD Architect should not have to re-encode anything.

  Thanks for your input John!

  I did exactly what you suggested and it didn’t work.

  I didn’t change any settings in the Sony Vegas template at all and opened the according Blu-Ray project in Sony DVD Architect. Menu based, AVC 1920×1080-50i, 16:9 with AC-3 Stereo sound.

  (audio bitrate is 192kbps)

  The weird thing is that if I export a short clip of 3 minutes it works without any problems, but when I try to export the whole 34 minutes it’s not working.

  As I already said I’m mounting the resulting iso file with Daemon Tools and play it back with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 5.0.1.86 and Power DVD 10, neither works though.

  Maybe it’s because of my project properties in Sony Vegas:

  I’ve rendered numerous test video samples and came to the followung results:

  Instead of rendering the entire 34minute movie I’ve tried to render only 10 minutes and the problem from above

  appears with that 10min clip already (I can’t play the resulting iso file from DVDA).

  I only used the “Blu-ray 1920×1080-50i, 16 Mbps video stream” template for those test video samples.

  It works with the “Blu-ray 1920×1080-50i, 10 Mbps video stream” template though.

  I’ve tried to render to 15 Mbps and 14Mbps and it still didn’t work.

  This is all with the SONY AVC codec suggested by John.

  As I previously said I’ve had successfully authored a 1h24m movie with PCM audio and a cbr of 17Mbps with the

  MainConcept MPEG-2 codec and the “Blu-ray 1920×1080-24p” template in Vegas.

  I tried to do the same with my current movie (which was filmed with the same camera/settings), but it’s not

  working.

  Any idea what might be the problem here?

  I can’t imagine why a short video with AC3 audio would play and a longer video would not. Does the ISO file totally not play? not recognized? or just no audio? Do you have a real Blu-ray player to test with?

  Thanks for your help John!

  In TotalMedia Theatre I get an error message that says:

  “This CD/DVD can’t be played back.”

  In Power DVD 10 I get.

  “This disc format is not supported.”

  Nothing plays back.

  If I manually open the mts file there’s no audio, but the video works (Windows Media Player 11). I get audio and

  video with VLC Media Player, Power DVD 10 and TotalMedia Theatre, but no menu though.

  Alright, I just found out something:

  If I mount the image and then go to the virtual drive and drag and drop both folders (BDMV & CERTIFICATE) into a

  new folder on my Desktop it plays back just fine with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 5.0.1.87 (even the menu works

  fine).

  So that means that there’s something wrong with the mounting process I guess?
  But why does my other Blu-Ray (mainconcept mpeg-2, full hd @ 24fps progressive w/ PCM audio) project play back just

  fine in Total MediaTheatre when it’s mounted with Daemon Tools?

  Anyway: Is there a guarantee that it’ll play fine on a blu-ray player, because it plays fine on TotalMedia Theatre?

  I had no errors during the prepare process of the iso file from DVDA, thus I guess it should be fine, right?

  I heard that Power DVD is based on the software of DVD/Blu-Ray players, so if it doesn’t work on there it won’t

  work on a DVD/Blu-Ray player, is that correct?

  Is there a way to test a Blu-Ray authored with DVDA if it’ll work on a Blu-Ray player without actually burning it

  to Blu-Ray and testing the burned Blu-Ray on the Blu-Ray player? I actually don’t have any way to play back or burn

  a Blu-Ray (physicially).

  Is there a way to play back a BDMV folder structure with Power DVD 10 and actually see the menu?

  Since my movie is only 34m long, can I just burn it to a DVD and play that in a blu-ray player just fine (I know it

  won’t work in a DVD player)? I mean Blu-Ray discs aren’t that cheap and it would be quite a waste of space to burn

  4GB on a 25GB Blu-Ray- I can’t afford to have that.

  I don’t know if any software can guarantee what the real hardware can do. The only way I know of checking is to buy a Blu-ray player and test it for real. You can buy a Blu-ray player for as cheap as $89 now so there is no reason not to own one if you plan on making Blu-ray discs.
