Vegas Linking to Wrong Clips
Ok, so a new problem has developed in just the last couple of days. I have had a project file that I’ve been editing for weeks now. It’s pretty close to being done. I hadn’t looked at it for a couple of days, but I loaded it back up last night.
First off, I’m plagued with “red screens” through a lot of my clips. Sometimes they play in preview, sometimes it’s just black with sound. But on the timeline the clips are red.
Second problem – and this is the big one – the wrong clips are being linked to on the timeline! I thought at first that I had made a mistake, because all these scenes were suddenly out of order. But what really happened is all of my cuts are in the correct place, but it’s linking those cuts to another file. Basically I’m working with two big .AVI files titled “thursday tape 1” and “thursday tape 2”. They are both roughly 20 gigs and drawing from an external hard drive. Half of my project is working perfectly – the part that uses tape 1. But as soon as the tape 2 edits are supposed to start, it just uses those edits to playback parts of tape 1 again!
When I right click on one of the problem timeline video segments, it lists correctly “thursday tape 2” under active take name. But then if I click on the Media tab it shows me file name as “thursday tape 1”. What gives!

This is a well-known (and one of the most annoying) bugs in Vegas Pro. There is no solution, as far as I know, except if you have a backup copy of your project. AutoSave from Excalibur or Backups from Vegasaur can protect you from such problems in the future.
