Rendering video to HD
Posted by Liam Unger on December 29, 2010 at 5:41 pmI’m working on a project that includes many video clips. Many of these clips were captured by an amateur and are therefore shaky. As well, some of the objects in the video move fast.
In one case there are people dancing 3ft away from the camera. After rendering, instead of being blurred, I get something that looks like it dropped every other frame and it was going 15fps instead of just blurring it a bit.
The original video is 720×480 @ 9100kbps.
audio: 256kbps sample rate: 48kHz
29fpswhat setting can i use to get the most out of it and still have high quality?

720×480 is not HD. If you are resizing SD to HD you are going to loose some quality.

How are you determining this? Are you playing the HD footage and it plays back choppy? This could be because your computer is not fast enough to playback the HD video at full speed. Have you ever played back HD video like this before and was it smooth?

What are your project properties set to? (width, height, fps)
What are you rendering properties? (width, height, fps, render type)
Is all of your footage 720×480?
You need to tell us more about what you are doing before we can tell you what settings to use.

I would appreciate if you can tell me what properties to set it on to get the most of it.
Even when I set the properties HD 1080 60i the rendered video is 736×416.
I’m currently rendering to MP4 because on a previous instance it proved to be a lot smaller file size and clearer. (44 sec clip: AVI- ~160mb, MP4- ~8mb. and the MP4 file didn’t mess around with the colors).
When I say “get the most of it”, I basically want to know the best way to convert my SD to HD without losing much, (or is it better just to leave it on SD?). I’m producing a memories video which is to be distributed at a camp reunion. They want it to be as clear and in as high quality as possible.
this is a video i rendered @ 1920×1080 50fps 32bit floating point (video levels), render quality @ best, blur type @ gaussian

Your videos are SD. Your best solution is to render them as SD. They are not HD and will never look as good as HD. HD has 5x the resolution. Blowing SD up 5x to HD just makes for messy SD.
It looks like you blindly turned everything up to the highest settings you could find (i.e., Pixel format 32-bit, Render quality Best, etc.) without understanding the consequences. This is not the best approach. Reset everything to the defaults (Pixel format 8-bit, render quality Good, motion blur Gaussian, etc.)
For now, set your project to NTSC DV Widescreen (720×480, 29.970 fps) and set all the other properties back to their defaults.
How do you plan to deliver these videos? on DVD? on a Hard drive? on a USB stick? and how will they be played back. That will determine how you should render them.

Total video will be aprox. 75 min.
What’s the best output format to deal with? (now I’m using MP4)

I would use the Sony AVC render type with the Memory Stick SD NTSC widescreen – 6256 Kbps template. This should give you output as good as the original footage.

And (hopefully) one last question for this thread, I’m rendering these videos in ~5min parts and after I have all the parts I will render them into one long video. I do that to minimize the trouble I have to go to if only a few seconds of the video is to be omitted.
Is rendering a video and then rerendering with more video gonna compromise the quality? -

It will not make things worse but it will increase the render time significantly with no appreciable gain in quality. So if you have all the time in the world, you can leave it at Best.

Yes, definitely and depending on which codec you use it can significantly reduce the quality.
If you want to create interim renders, they should be using Video for Windows with the NTSC DV Widescreen template. These will maintain the quality of your original video (which I’ve been assuming is DV Widescreen from the looks of your YouTube video).
