  • Rendering an H.264 File?

Posted by Thomas Reget on December 24, 2010 at 5:49 pm

I am having difficulty rendering out HD for broadcast. The file requirements from the broadcasters are:

    HD VIDEO
    1280X720p
H.264 (MPEG-4) muxed as an Apple Quick Time .MOV
    16:9 29.97 frames/sec, (4.2.0 Chroma subsampling at an 8-bit depth
Bitrate may be variable or constant and GOP structuree can be fixed 15 or dynamic

    HD AUDIO
    16 bit PCM Audio Only
    Sample Rate 48000 Hz
    Bitrate 128 or better
    2 Channel Stereo only.

Can anyone point me to the corect rendering template and any internal tweaks required.

You can’t render this from within Vegas Pro because it doesn’t support h.264 in a Quicktime wrapper. You need to buy Quicktime Pro for this. Render your footage out of Vegas using uncompressed or Motion-JPEG or even Avid DNxHD (which you can downlaod for free) and then load that file into Quicktime Pro and render to h.264 from there.

John, I have a client (yes, he is an idiot) who won’t take *anything* but h.264 in a mov file. I downloaded and installed the Avid DNxHD codec, but it doesn’t show in my render-as menus. What am I looking for?

    Thanks

[Stephen Mann] “I downloaded and installed the Avid DNxHD codec, but it doesn’t show in my render-as menus. What am I looking for?”

You need to make a Quicktime template that uses it:

    1. Choose File | Render As…
    2. Select Quick Time 7 as the render type and Default Template (uncompressed) as the template. This will match your project properties.
    3. Then press the Custom… button and on the Video tab under Video format select Avid DNxHD Codec.
    4. Next press the Configure… button and configure the codec to the properties you need.
    5. Finally, save that under a name that is descriptive.

You now have an Avid DNxHD template. I configured mine to use the 1080i/59.94 DNxHD 145 8-bit but you can use the 1080i/59.94 DNxHD 220 10-bit setting if you really want high quality.

Hi John I’m also rendering a HD video using Vegas Pro 10 and I have got the Avid DNxHD but the video output is not playable…Can you help me?

    Original File
    720p@24fps
    MJPG
    34601kbps

And this is my setup page.

    I use 720p/23.976 DNxHD 90 8-bit

    Have I done anything wrong?
Also the properties of the output file is showing “Avdn,” is this normal?

I’m not sure what could be wrong. I just created a template the same as yours and the output was playable in both Vegas and QuickTime player. As I said, I’m sure what could be wrong. You might want to contact Sony support because you seemed to have set up the template correctly.
