  • Red line on map – a la Indiana Jones…

I know this is a very old thread, and everybody has probably moved on to Vegas 10 because….. erm…it’s new and shiny, I guess… but…

One way to get a red line ‘travelling’ on your map is:

Drop in your image of your map.
Then ‘shift it down’ several times, to create about four or five time-lines.

‘Media generators’ -> Solid colour -> Red.
    (In a time-line ABOVE the map’s time-line – it doesn’t matter which one.)

Highlight the time-line with the Red block.

Then, from the tool-bar at the top of the screen –
Tools -> Video -> Track Motion

With the little rectangle that pops up, use that to ‘crop and create’ your (straight!) red line.

Use the arrow to slide and rotate the line to where you want it on the screen / map.

I found it much easier to control the line’s thickness and length (it’s called “Width” in the menu) by using the up and down arrows.
The line’s ‘thickness’ (“Height”) looks good at around “10”-ish, but it’s up to you.

Go to ‘Tools’ → ‘Insert Empty Event’ and drop the white box onto the time-line before the red block.
You’ll want the overlap to be quite long, so that your red line appears slowly and gracefully.

Then go to ‘Transitions’, select ‘Linear Wipe’ and drop that in.

You’ll need to play around with the ‘Angle’ setting to get the exact positioning you’re after, but it’s very simple and straight-forward.

To mark each “Destination” along your route, drop in another solid red block above the time-line with your map on.
Then use the circular ‘Cookie Cutter’ to give you a red dot where you want it.

Maintain the first red line (and now the red dot), and now start working on the next leg of the journey.

Once you’ve cracked it, it’s really very simple.

    Look out Micheal Kahn!!

    Cheers,
    David.

Another way with less video tracks and complexity.

1)Use your favorite photo editor to draw a line on your map, start to finish.

2)Insert two video tracks one with the line another without one on top of another.

3)Use a cookie cutter ‘cut away section’ starting size zero (frame 1) ending size max (last frame) if the map without line is on top. Change the cookie cutter to ‘Cut away all but selection’ if the map with line is on top with starting size max and ending size zero.

    Cheers.
