best 64bit codec pack
Posted by Grzegorz Kwiatkowski on December 7, 2010 at 8:27 pmHi,
I just installed fresh Windows 7. What is the best 64-bit codec pack to install and to work with Vegas 10?

NONE! Never, ever, ever install a codec-pak on a video editing computer. You run the risk of overlaying the high quality codecs that came with Vegas with lower quality free codecs that may cause Vegas to not work properly.
If you need a particular codec, use a utility like GSpot to determine which codec you need and only install that codec from a reputable source (preferably the manufacturer)
Installing a codec-pak is like taking every pill in your medicine cabinet hoping that one of them will make you better. One of them might but the rest of them could also kill you.

When you say “not work properly,” are you referring to bugs or complete impairment of the program? I run Sony Vegas 8 on a Windows 7 64bit as well but it’s incredibly buggy. Is it possible that such a “low quality codec” was already installed on my computer and that’s what’s causing it to not work properly?

Usually it manifests itself with not being able to read files correctly, and rendering problems which include not being able to render or low quality renders.

If you are running 8.1, yes it is buggy. This has nothing to do with codec-paks. 8.1 is more of a “technology preview” than a production version and personally I would not use it for serious work.
If you are talking about 8.0c then that should be fairly stable and instability could be from codec-paks.
