Hoping someone here has any ideas on this:

About 6 months ago Vegas Pro 9 stopped being able to use QT files (.mov extensions). When I click on them in explorer view, it recognizes the format and displays the file properties, but when dropping it into a timeline the resulting media is just a black screen.

This behavior is true in both Vegas pro 8 and 9 (I have both installed on the same machine). I’ve tried

    – uninstalling and reinstalling QT.
    – rolling back to a previous version of QT
    – upgrading to QT pro
    – uninstalling and reinstalling Vegas pro 9

    No luck. Nothing changes.

Any thoughts? Anyone seen this before?

Now that IS strange. There some problems with some versions of quicktime I’ve read. Does it not see quicktime files from another source? Does Quicktime (*mov) show up as an available render type? My guess is there’s something with the mov files your trying to use.

    – The QT files are usually sourced from other editors working in FCP or After Effects. Has been a real mixed bag of codecs inside the files, but seriously, if they’re in a .mov wrapper they just don’t work. H.264, DV, Uncompressed, Motion Jpeg– I’ve tried them all. If it’s a .mov container = black screen.

    – I do still have the option to render .mov. In retrospect I’m not 100% sure if I’ve tried to render to QT since the read issue started happening, be now I’m curious to see if output shows the same ‘black screen’ problem.

    – Thinking now, the only thing I can think of I might have changed was adding Avid DNxHD codec which works in Vegas through the QT engine. Although I think I added that about a year ago and the problem seems more recent, I think I’m gonna try to remove that codec when I get home and see if anything changes.

But yeah- seriously- multiple files, multiple codecs from multiple systems and multiple editors, same problem. I’m baffled.

Most likely you updated to the latest QT from Apple. I had this problem and had to go to a specific version, v7.6.4 and it worked. There are a few threads on this forum about incompatible QT versions that mess up Vegas.

I had same issue. I uninstalled Quicktime from my computer (whatever version is bundled with itunes 10). I downgraded to a previous version of quicktime and no more black video (of course now itunes 10 doesn’t work for me, but i decided to uninstall that bulk software from my computer and use mediamonkey).
