Well, I’m blown away by it – it’s amazing. The only thing that I can think of is that it’s ALL done in 3D (though the people look pretty real). I can’t imagine the work that went into it tho….

My guess and it’s only a guess is that they’ve used the same technique that is used in ‘Heroes’. That show has developed poseable metal rigs which can support actors in unusual/impossible positions then they’ll have had to run a 3D tracker program like Syntheyes in order to add all of the visual effects like explosions, glass and fire.

Very, very clever and incredibly labour intensive.

Well Graham, thanks for your post. I am going to make some trial shots and check Syntheyes out .
I will see how many hours, days, weeks or months I will spend on trying to realize a short sequence 😛

I have done effects like this before, its far simpler than it first appears.

The people are just standing still as the camera tracks through the scene with door ways used as wipes, the explosions and fire are created in post as well as some of the broken glass (put in using a 3d motion tracker). (that’s part of the reason the robber is wearing the clown mask… so you can have lots of different guys as the same character).

Everything from the money hanging on wires to the cops to the men falling (also on wires) are actually just there sanding really still.

You spray everything with starch and spray-on adhesive and there you go.

Very impressive and as usual the most impressive things are the most simple… remember bullet time in the matrix and from that rolling stones video and thinking it was amazing… its just slow motion… or stills with an interstitial morph.

Anyway, hope that helps a little… if you shoot anything I’d love to see it, see how you worked with the idea.

    All the best
    Tim
