Capturing HD video from HDR-FX7
Posted by Mark Nacovitch on October 9, 2010 at 11:53 pmUsing Vegas Pro 9, I try to capture HD video from camcorder. I never get any video in the preview window. It does recognize the camera, and if I shut it off, I get the message “do you want to stop capturing”. I have done a lot of work capturing DV, yet having issues with HD.

October 10, 2010 at 1:29 amThree things to check:
- Is your camera set to output HDV via firewire? The FX7 can output DV or HDV over firewire. Make sure it’s set to output HDV.
- Does Windows recognise your camera when you plug it into the firewire port? If Windows doesn’t recognize it, Vegas won’t either.
- Are you using the HDV capture utility in Vegas Pro? Vegas has both a DV capture utility and and HDV capture utility. Make sure that you are using the correct one.

October 10, 2010 at 10:11 amYes to all three questions. I get nothing at all in the preview screen, and it doesnt seem to capture anything. It does turn in my camcorder, but not much else.

October 10, 2010 at 12:13 pmWow that’s odd. In the HDV capture utility under Prefs does it correctly show your camera on the Device tab?

Yea, that’s exactly what mine says for my Sony HVR-Z1U. Are you using Vegas Pro 9.0e? This works for me in 9.0e and I can see a live preview when the camera is turned on to Camera and I can capture from tape when the camera is turned on to VCR. I’m using Windows 7 64-bit.

October 10, 2010 at 6:36 pm9.0e ver 1146. I am out of ideas. I have Windows 7 also. What do you mean by ” when the camera is turned to camera”? I put my camera on VCR when attempting to capture to my computer.

October 10, 2010 at 11:09 pmNow even in DV, I get the error box The device Sony HDR-FX7 could not be opened. Also in the blue box, the message says, Preview is turned off. I have looked everywhere for this SMART PREVIEW VIDEO, or ALWAYS PREVIEW VIDEO boxes to make sure they are enabled. I know it see’s my camera. I even deleted the software, re-installed it-to no avail.

Yes, when capturing from tape the On/Off switch should be on VCR. If you place it on “Camera” you can capture live as you record.

October 11, 2010 at 3:39 pmWhat is happening is-it is capturing to a temp file-but as soon as I stop capturing, the temp file disappears-and that’s the problem. Sony told me to turn off all anti virus software-they claimed that was preventing the temp file from actually writing a permanent file. Did that…same problem.I actually paid 29 dollars for a one time call-Did me no good. Any help would me much appreciated!!
