  • Applying Plugins or transitions to Basic Text in Vegas

    Hello again,

I am struggling with Pro Type titler. I cannot figure out the flow of how it works. My buddy who convinced me to get this Vegas system says it has a steep learning curve. He uses the basic text and suggests I start there. The problem is that I shoot weddings and other special event video and my former matrox/premiere system had some nice effects that could be easily applied the the text. (and are consequently what my customers expect)

I have seen a few plugins for Vegas from companies like Pixelan, Boris. NetBlue, etc. and was looking for feedback specific to their effectiveness with text manipulation. I’m not looking for Emmy award winning stuff, just the ability to apply some 3D moves or transitions to the text. Is this possible in the basic text of Vegas with some of these plugins, or with the transitions in Vegas? If not, are there any solid tutorials on Pro Type Titler?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice.

There is a training DVD from VASST on the PTT…it is definitely different. Well written as a software piece, but it doesn’t fit into the Vegas workflow with any degree of intuitive use.
The 3D trrack tools are useful, as are the various effects that can be dropped on the titles. But…extruding titles (what I think you’re alluding to ala Matrox) is not possible.
Use transitions on the incoming and outgoing portions of the titles from the transition tool vs the PTT tool; you should be pleased.
Start with the templates….go from there.

Let me just lay out what I think you mean and please correct me if I’m wrong. I tried to get some help from sony tech support but it didn’t go well. I think the tech was a little unfamiliar with the basic text functions and I was maybe not as clear on what I was trying to do.

-All transitions must be on the same track, above the video.
-According to my discussion with the tech, I start with an empty text box, then put the first section of text in a second box next to it. When I drag the 2nd box over the first and create a transition, I can then drop and effect on there that will bring in the text over the video.
    – If I want to move the text off screen, I create another empty text box on the other end and repeat the process.

What I found when doing this was that some of the effects do not work on the text, but rather the whole image. What I mean is if it is a page roll for example, the text does not roll in, but the entire frame rolls in as if it were two images or pieces of video. I’m not sure if I am making myself clear. I did however find that some of the flip in or zoom in DVE’s seemed to work. Maybe it is a case of trial and error and only a certain number of transitions will work with text.

I plan on purchasing the set of Pixelan plug ins for Vegas in the hope that many of these will accomplish this. I do mostly weddings and special event video now so text manipulation is important. Any advice on other options that have proved to be effective would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your help.

    Dan.

    Hi Dan,
I want to say that you do not need any additional events if you want to create transition. A transition can be applied to a single event. All you have to do is to create a fade in or fade out and apply the transition.

BTW, check out 3D Six-pack transitions from Pixelan
