how to extract 15s clip from DVD?

What is the simplest way to extract a 15 sec. clip from a commerscial movie on DVD?

Womble MPEG Video Wizard. It will let you cut out a section and save it with no re-rendering.

HI John,
I downloaded the program and installed it. I can’t seem to get the DVD imported. Is this what I should be trying to do?
I tried to import a .VOB file… no luck.
Any clues?

This is a good question. I am in the similar situation in that I would like to cut out a couple of minutes of dance routine from my daughter’s dance recital video. I had the pleasure of being in the parent dance. Some of the available programs like the one mentioned are a bit costly. What do you think about DVD Knife which is a free program? It extracts clips to VOB format. The clip could then be converted and later edited in Sony Vegas.

OK, my bad… I just saw that you said “commercial” DVD. These are copy protected which is why you can’t import them. If these were your own DVD’s or non-copy protected DVD’s then Womble would work. No commercial software will do this.
Unfortunately, when you bought the DVD you only bought the right to watch it. You didn’t buy the rights to make a derivative work from it, which would be illegal without permission from the copyright holder. I can’t tell you how to break the law but there are plenty of other web sites that will.

DVD Knife looks like it should work as long as the disc doesn’t have copy protection on it.

Ok, that explains why I couldn’t get anywhere.
It was a scene from a movie for my wife’s viewing, not resale or public viewing… I guess we’ll have to pass on the idea.

Mark, The Womble has a fully functional 30-day trial copy available. It might do the trick for your one-off project.
