I have finished my movie. I need to send a version of it to the above. Their specs simply say:

We can accept many formats, but we recommend encoding your video at 480 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall at 30 frames per second.
Keep the overall file size under 2GB.

The best formats for encoding are Flash Video (either Sorenson or VP6 codec) or Quicktime.

I don’t think I can render to Flash from Vegas Pro 9, so that leaves Quicktime.

However, when I try this with various settings I either get a movie with weird sound (all tinny and phaser-like), or good sound with no image.***

The movie is 30fps, (not 29.97), 1080p and in cineform format and has sound in 5.1.

I clearly need to render to stereo and much smaller as per the specs. (It’s 20m46s long).

    Anyone recommend settings?

*** Note: When played back in Windows Media Player, not in a QT player.

Fred, if you have Pro 9, use the default settings in the Sony AVC / Internet 16:9 HD 30p template.
It’s going to come out in mp4 format at 1280 x 720 but, as they didn’t say that it HAD to be encoded at a lower resolution, you should be OK.
I just tried a one minute test render and it was only 50 MB. so your 20 min. project will be well the 2 GB. limit.
If they complain about the mp4 format, change the extension to .mov as it’ll still play in QuickTime.

Good luck and please let us know how it turns out as similar questions have come up in the past.

You do realize that those dimensions are 4:3 and not 16:9! You may want to letterbox the video yourself to be “in control” and give them a 16:9 letterboxed in 4:3 version which is going to be very tiny.

Yes John, I do realise. But I’ll be following Mike’s advice meaning that the picture will be 16:9 and a lot larger anyway.

I did a render and it came out to just under a gig – in line with Mike’s mini-test. And it looks fine and sounds fine.

I’ll rename it to ‘.mov’ and upload it tomorrow and let you know if it gets accepted or not.

Cheers everyone. And you in particular John, as without your previous advice on this forum I would have never got this done!

So – I uploaded the HD render (as Mike suggested). The only thing I changed in the template was from 29.97 to 30 fps.

So it uploaded fine and was accepted. What I hadn’t realised though is that they process it into a smaller, flash version anyway! It’s in a 4:3 box so has black top and bottom and is 640 pixels wide.

So there you go. Now we know!

Thanks again for your help Mike and John.

    Fred, thanks for the update.
Take some consolation in the fact that they had a higher quality file to begin with before the conversion.

Actually they’ve done a good job. Apart from the size difference I can’t see a noticeable quality drop at all. 🙂

That’s good to know. Thanks for closing the loop.
