  • difficulties panning an image (Ken Burns effect)

Posted by Gilles Gagnon on August 24, 2010 at 5:53 pm

I have brought in an image whose width and height is larger than my project’s size.

I can not for the life of me use the pan/crop tool to pan it. the viewing area maintains the size of the picture as it forces it to fit in the preview window.

Since the image is larger than my project, I thought I would easily be able to pan/crop to simulate a Ken Burns effect.

    how can I do this?

    Gilles

    Hey Ken,

What picture and video size are you dealing with? And are you using the P&C of the clip or the track?

    Helping people is cool!

Gilles, after you open the Pan/Crop window, right-click on the image and select “Match Output Aspect”.
Now zoom in to the desired start point by placing the cursor at any one of the 4 corners.
This automatically creates a start keyframe.
On the Pan/Crop timeline, move your cursor to the end and position the box accordingly.
This automatically creates an end keyframe.
    Exit and you’re done.
If you want to do anything fancier, add more keyframes and position the image as desired.
Remember that, since this is Vegas, you can double-click the image/clip, press Play and Loop, open up Pan/Crop and watch any changes reflected instantly while you’re watching it being played back.

Not a problem Gilles – or should I say Ken 🙂
Welcome to the wonderful world of panning and cropping and keyframing.
I use this feature a lot and love it.
