  • need to extract video of the sound waves from audio track

    The situation is

videos for teaching med students, of sick children with different types of cough / wheeze/ stridor due to different diseases (pneumonia, asthma, croup) etc….
they need to learn to distinguish the different sounds

With video capture software such as Vegas you can see the differently shaped wave forms in the audio track, as static image, ie croup gives a diamond shape, bronchiolitis gives a square shape etc,

What I do is use a screen capture programme, to cut out an image of the audio track as a jpeg and through photoshop superimpose a layer of the sound wave image over the video of the child’s breathing… but this is tedious and innacurate… what is needed is an actual video , of the sounds spectral analysis, ( like an oscillascope trace) which is perfectly synchronised with the sound that creates the wave forms, and which I can render together as an alpha channel over the video…. hope it makes sense…..

The waveform on the timeline is pretty coarse for that purpose. Your best solution would be a PC-based oscilloscope and a screen-capture program like Camtasia. I haven’t ever used one, but there are free oscilloscope programs on the web. I plan to try using the Visual Analyzer (https://www.sillanumsoft.org/) soon because it has a waterfall display which I want to experiment with. I notice in the specs that there is also a capture feature, but again, I only know what their website says.

    Thanks Sir
it appears that this software can not import video files or any sound files, it is a recording software,
I need something which can import video or audio files and analyse them and produce a dynamic oscillosope trace…

    Hi Steve.

Just so you know, Snagit 10 is much cheaper than Camtasia, and it now does screen recordings. (It is also made by TechSmith.)

Camtasia has some editing tools, but they pale in comparison to what is available inside of Vegas.

Thanks, all the oscilloscopes I find merely visualise a short segment of sound up to 200mS and generate an image only

Is there a plugin for vegas or stand alone program which actually records a continuous dynamic real time video wave form?
