Terribly slow rendering
Hi all,
I’m new to the forums and new to video editing, so please bare with me!
I’m trying to edit 1920×1080@60i footage shot with a Canon HF100 (.m2ts files) using Sony Vegas Studio HD Platinum 10.0.
My output is AVCHD 1920×1080@60i with the goal of burning it to a DVD for playing on the PS3.When it’s time for rendering however, I can render a 15 minutes video in 9 hours, which seems crazy for me, especially considering it was much faster when I used Power Director.
My specs are Q9550@stock, 8GB DDR2, HD4870 1GB.
I know rendering is CPU-dependant but I doubt my CPU is outdated? I get better performance with other software! Is there anything I should know? Can i use my GPU for faster rendering too?

I can’t answer your question, however can tell you what I did last time created/rendered something in vegas. Create a very short clip from the original file, ie cut 15min down to 15secs and render that to the output you eventually want to create. Experiment with rendering settings to get the best quality and fastest time. It could be you are doing something unnecessary or could be result not what you are looking for. I rendered an .mts file to a dvd and took me a long time to get settings right before I got result was looking for. The fastest way, I found, was to merge multiple .mts files (or .m2ts) with TSmuxer (free) then use ConvertXtoDVD. Basically skip Vegas altogether. I have no clue why after 9 versions Vegas is so slow rendering. It’s beyond me…

Here’s why… for the first 7 versions AVCHD did not exist and Vegas was the fastest NLE for rendering. Try rendering DV AVI to DVD MPEG2 and it’s about 4x faster than real-time! The introduction of AVCHD has unfortunately overpowered current CPU capabilities and so GPU rendering is now the solution which Vegas Movie Studio HD 10 has but Vegas Pro 9 does not. If you have a powerful GPU, download the trial of Movie Studio HD 10 and see for yourself. I’ll bet the other tools you are using are taking advantage of the GPU as well.

So you are trying to make a Blu-ray formatted disc on DVD media?

How are you rendering? Are you rendering a Blu-ray directly from the timeline? Have you tried that?
Can i use my GPU for faster rendering too?
Yes. Movie Studio HD 10 uses the GPU by default. How powerful a graphics card do you have? If not very powerful, your CPU might be even faster so you might try turning GPU rendering off in the Custom options of the Sony AVC rendering template.

I guess so… since I don’t have a Bluray burner all I can do is burn AVCHD to a DVD media.
How are you rendering? Are you rendering a Blu-ray directly from the timeline? Have you tried that?
I’m not sure what you mean. Here’s a link to a screenshot (https://yfrog.com/7dss3tqj). I just use the Make Movie button on top of the window. Is this rendering directly from the timeline?

No. Try Tools | Burn Disc | Blu-ray Disc…

You are already using Movie Studio HD and YES it supports GPU rendering. Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0 is what I meant by Movie Studio HD 10 (geez you think Sony could add a few more names) 😉

If you want the DVD to play in a regular outboard DVD player, then yes you must render as DVD compliant mpeg-2 or use their DVD Arc. templates. These will lower the resolution to SD though. If you want the DVDs to play in a relative fast computer, you can render as WMV and use one if the HD presets and keep it HD. Hope this helps,
