    Hey All,

I am looking to possibly use my in-house Gigabit network for storage and some basic editing. I have 3 video editing computers and use a lot of files across them all. I am considering getting a NAS (network attached storage) to use for my main backup and place for common video files. I shoot and edit in HDV 1440x1080i and often do a 3-6 camera setup for live concerts and event. I want to know if this is a good route to go and if any of you have used a NAS to house your media files. I understand that Vegas says to use gigabit for HDV, but want to see how those in the real world are doing it and their results. If I am planning on editing a 6 camera shoot I would have the files on the local editing computer using my SATA II drives…however for basic 1-camera edits and backing up my projects….thoughts?

    Thanks!!

It is not exactly the same, but I have a one-workstation setup, and backup to a Drobo via USB 2.0. I have had no real issues. Twice I had to unplug the Drobo to get it to respond, which was a little scary, but once unplugged and replugged it worked fine.

If I had more workstations I would get the Drobo NAS attachment, and use it without hesitation. However, I am kind of paranoid about data loss, so I would probably also back up finished projects somewhere else, also.

    I hope that is helpful.

Thanks but I really need to know about gigabit LAN for a NAS. I have about 20 hard drives from esata to USB2 that I currently use for backup and so on. I am trying to keep from needing to have more than one computer on if I need to take something from my “stock footage” and such, and I am also trying to keep from needing to be redundant on every computer as well. Also, a lot of times I may want to edit one project on numerous computers, as one may be rendering something as I continue an edit on another…again it is tough if I need to access files from a computer that is rendering OR copying files to yet another computer.. So if a NAS is fast enough to edit HDV reasonably I will go for it…thanks I hope someone has done this and can answer the question…but thanks for your input!

    Regards
    Scott
