I have a very important client where I need to simply send several .avi files rendered in Vegas to his technicians that use Final Cut Pro and MAC. I know this has been covered earlier but in the constantly changing world of media things can change quickly.

My files are rendered as best quality for a standard DVD-R format in Vegas. Very generic and I have had no troubles playing any resulting DVD’s in players around the world.

I want to simply load up .avi files rendered in vegas to an external drive and ship them off to his techies to work on in FCP. The big question for me is this one. In modern day workings here does this work seamlessly where they can easily work on .avi files in FCP without me needing to do anything from my end?

I dont want to avoid us both being extremely disappointed if the .avi files wont work in FCP.

    Thanks!

AVI is a tricky format, like MOV in the sense that they’re both just wrappers for any of hundreds of different audio and video codecs. You didn’t mention specifically what kind of format your avi’s are, but I can tell you I’ve had plenty of success loading up standard definition DV/DVCAM 720×480 avi files directly into FCP. However if you want to be sure it doesn’t take much time to just rerender them out as DV/DVCAM mov files just so they don’t freak out when they open the drive to see a bunch of avi files. Mac users are easily spooked.

Now if these are HD files you’re talking about then I’m not sure what format they are or what the FCP users prefer.

David thanks for this advice. I have included a screen print from the .avi file that will be sent. You can see the dimensions and other details. Do you still think that this will load up in FCP easily?

Also I will be sending about 20 gigs of edited video to my client loaded on a seagate FreeAgent Goflex external drive. The claim to fame of these drives is that they say they work seamlessly between MAC and PC.

I once rendered a clip using .mov format for a friend with a mac and burned the DVD. The disc kept stalling and skipping when played on his MAC so I have been hesitant to render my vegas files using the .mov option and thought perhaps that .avi would work better.

Thanks and any more suggestions would be sure helpful!

To find out detailed information on a clip, try dragging it into the Vegas timeline, right-click on the clip then go down to Properties, then over to the General tab. You can easily copy and paste that text in here without worrying about a screenshot. What the screencap you took tells me is just that it’s standard definition, which is a good start.

The main problem I think you might have is that typically when a drive says it’ll work on Mac and PC, it uses the FAT32 file system. The limitation of FAT32 is that it doesn’t allow for files greater than 4 gigabytes, and that file you posted is over 11gb. If this is some new drive that uses some sort of software package to be universally compatible maybe that’s all fine, but if it is FAT32 then you’re going to have to chop that clip up into 4gb parts. I end up having to do the same thing exporting 4gb mov files for a friend, and to be safe I normally use 18 minute partitions which come out around 3.7gb.

have had success from V9 (3 hr rough cut project) to FCP using autoduck pro import FCP 2.0 ..
export from vegas as AAF (choose avid) .. then open AAF using autoduck
now it comes down to will the media open in FCP ?
you might have to do converting …

we had dv, p2, HDV, hd .. we did convert many to sony mxf HD 4:2:2 then replaced the original media in V9 with the MXF ..

to make a long story short the AAF using autoduck worked and the project is now being edited in FCP ..
not all transitions came thru correctly but they did show up as something .. few times the sync audio didn’t come thru in some places = went back into V9 and LOCKED audio to TL and then it came thru … ended up exporting the 3hr TL in 4 sections …

in past we were rendering edited Media out of Vegas using sony MXF HD codec’s … then took those over to FCP to finish editing …
we use MacDrive (on PC) to get past Mac/PC hard drive issues & FAT 32 issues ..

I seem to be getting conflicting opinions.

    1. No problem importing .avi files to final cut pro as long as they are small files in order to deal with fat32 issue.

    2. No you cannot do that without a intermediate software that is designed especially to convert the .avi files to .mov.

Okay what is really the truth here. I would think this would be a common issue especially for those with Vegas wanting to share their video with MAC users.

    Thanks

.avi and .mov i beleive is a wrapper and there are many different kinds of .mov & .avi codec’s …
not all .avi’s ( i don’t know of any that play without a conversion) ) will play in FCP just like not all .mov created in FCP play on a PC … and not all .mov created on a PC will play in FCP …
in my experience render uncompressed QT in Vegas ( using either none or animation codec) will play in FCP = any other QT codec is about 80%+ it will not play in FCP without a conversion on the Mac end …
when i render on a PC using DVCpro codec (.mov) it doesn’t play back on mac = got me ….
rendering using sony MXF then it depends on the Mac editor system if they have a sony MXF reader ..
you need to find a codec that works on both your PC and on the FCP system … if you use Sheer codec then the mac needs the sheer reader ( sheer codec does not come as standard with either PC/mac OS and not all of the different sheer configurations work on both the mac/pc)
bottom line is do some test to see what works best and in your budget ( also consider time if Mac need to convert) vs. buying codec, plugin’s …
