video for web vs video for tv color problem
Hello guys..want to thank you all in advance for this forum..and all the knowledge you share…this is so valuable and I’m really appreciative for all of you!
I’m working on a video that will be aired on tv…but also needs to go online web. Using sony vegas 9 pro. My issue is I I’m using a dell monitor..and also an hdtv… the video raw..no color correction or nothing…looks fine for the most part on the dell monitor..but looks very dark in most places on the hdtv…
Do I need to do 2 different versions ? One for you tube..and the other for tv ?? I’m afraid if I lighten it..for tv it will be too light on you tube… what should I do ? please help..thanks!

Yes, but first, you need to be sure that your Dell monitor is calibrated properly. I use a Spyder3 Elite to calibrate both of my monitors. If you can’t trust your PC monitor, then you have no frame of reference.
You definitely need to render two versions of your video. TV uses luminance levels from 16-235 while PC/Internet uses 0-255. You should color correct for TV using broadcast safe luminance levels and render for TV as such. Then before you render for the internet, add the Color Corrector with the Studio RGB to Computer RGB preset to your Master Video Output. This will convert from the lighter TV output to the darker internet output that you desire.

thank you John…please excuse my ignorance…but is there a video fx for broadcast luminace ?? do you mean broadcast colors in the fx tab ?? is there a general one I should use ? I’ve never used it b4…
also I have about 40 odd tracks..is there a way to hit a button to put the effects in all of them ?

You can just drop the Broadcast Colors FX on the master video output but that will clip your luminance which might not look right if you have details that are above the broadcast safe levels. It is much better to open your Video Scopes and watch your levels and use the Levels FX to bring any media back into compliance. This way you won’t loose any details.

You really need to adjust each one individually. As I said, if you just want a quick fix and don’t care, add Broadcast Colors to the master video output (above the preview window) and select the “Lenient – 7.5 Setup” preset and be done with it.
