Pressing record on Sony camera disconnects firewire in HDV mode?
Hi!
I have a problem with my firewire connection. Im using windows7, and Sony HVR-HD1000E in europe.
When I use DV mode, everything works, and the camera shows up in the operating system as Sony HVR-HD1000E.
BUT when I use HDV mode, it shows up as Microsoft DV device or something like that.
Whenever I press the record button on the camera in HDV mode, when connected with FireWire, the firewire connection is disconnected and the capture image in vegas freezes. It is the same in wirecast etc.
In vegas, I can press reconnect and then it works again. But there is a interruption which makes me not able to record the long files if I want to change tapes and re-press record.
Does anyone know what this can be and how to fis it?
I have the Firewire Legacy drivers, which work better in other ways. But this is still a problem that I have.

Two things have to happen to use HDV mode. (1) You must switch your camera into HDV mode. (2) You must use the HDV capture tool in Vegas. Both of these have to be the same for HDV capture to work. The first thing you need to do is get your PC to recognize your camera as an HDV device. Without that happening, Vegas will never be able to capture from it.

I think I have come to that stage. When I wrote the post I had put away the camera, so I remembered wrong. It shows up as an HDV device, as Sony HVR HD1000E in the sound & games controllers etc.
And in vegas its something like: Micosoft AV/C device and the same in Wirecast.
- I am able to capture HDV.
- BUT when I press the record button on the camera to record on a tape, the video that is being captured disconnects.
I would like to find a way to make it not disconnect. That way I can record to disc, and at the same time backup the recordings on tape.
Im starting to think Windows7 isnt the best OS for firewire HDV capture.

This may be a limitation of your camera. Perhaps it stops sending out to firewire when the transport engages to record and this is what’s dropping the signal. I’ve never heard of someone doing what you want i.e., recording to both tape and PC hard drive at the same time. Normally people just record to hard drive in which case you never press the camera record and you control all recording from the PC.
I use a Sony HVR-DR60 Hard Disk Recorder with my Sony HVR-Z1U camera so that I can record to tape and hard drive at the same time, but if I have the hard drive running in free mode and I press record on the camera, I get a glitch in the hard drive recording so I think it’s the camera that’s messing you up. My Z1 stops both audio and video to firewire for a brief second when record is engaged.

Wow, yea that could actually be part of it. I remember that pressing record used to mess the recording up (brief glitch/pause) at my old vista computer as well..
I was thinking of buying the memory card recorder: HVR-MRC1K so that I can record long events.
This probably means that I would have to go tapeless once the first tape runs out, until there is a pause where I can press record again.
But Im thinking maybe I should get that memory card recorder after all then. But thanks for letting me know about this record pause, so that I dont get disappointed once I try the memory recorder out.
But it would be better if hybrid recording over long sessions was possible. The memory recorder unit even has a mode where its supposed to record between tape switches.
So Im hoping for the best, although Murphys law clearly states that there will be a brief pause when pressing record no matter what I do. So the solution seems to be: find a way to record so I dont have to press record during a session.
Too bad about the tape backup.. would have been nice.

So does my hard disc recorder but the problem was that my Z1U also briefly cuts out the video and audio when the transport door opens. Now to be fair, this HDR was made for the Sony V1U and maybe that camera doesn’t cut out when the transport door opens but I was disappointed when I tried it with my Z1U. So just be aware of that.

I just wanted to post again to say thank you for this great information!
It helped me alot when planning my workflow. I think I will go with 2 cameras for long sessions, and just switch camera view in the editing afterwards when I switch tape/press record.
OR maybe I will get the memory recorder, and go tapeless after the 1st tape runs out, until I can get a pause to hit record again. That way I get a tape backup on Most of the video.
