July 19, 2006 at 10:57 pm in reply to: Using DVCPRO HD (720p) 16:9 to get 4:3

    Thanks for the replies, guys!

Also, thanks for clearing that up for me. It’s what I thought, but never really made sense to me for what ever reason.

I’m laying back to DVCAM(25) so what I’ll do to loose less quality, is to make an uncompressed sequence to paste my clips into, and use that to throw back to tape.

Having said that, what if I had another spot that was shot the same way, and we wanted to throw it out there in SD format, BUT we wanted to send it out in anamorphic, so that it would stretch to fit a widescreen TV? Is that even an option?

I’m having similar problems with any deck i connect via firewire to our 2 G5’s running FCP5.0.2. It will only see a deck if it’s connected via our AJA Io. Firewire will just plain not work. I’ve trashed prefs, reset P-ram, repairpermissions, plugged and unglugged and replugged turned off and on, and nothing works. The only thing I haven’t done, is re-install FCP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Using a DSR 1800 on one system, and a JVC mini-DV deck on the other.

Sorry, but I’m pretty sure you have to install everything at once. If you must upgrade, then you have to. It’s just one of the rules of thumb I’ve been taught, and I like to pass on.

As far as the bootable drive go to apple.com/support and search there. I can’t find the link or I’d just post it here.

    Good luck!

First and foremost… do NOT upgrade in the middle of any projects!!! That’s a real good way of breaking things. 2nd, make a bootable firewire drive (or if you have a partitioned or 2nd drive in your box). This way if after the upgrade, something goes horribly wrong you can also boot from one of those drives and fix things (and even do some work if you’re in an emergency). 3rd, consider waiting just a bit longer if you can. To make a long story short, our offices had to buy the Studio upgrades immediately in order to get a deal. We were between projects so I upgraded everything (took all weekend to do it right, but it was worth it!) Anyway, things, in general, are fine. I haven’t lost any media (knocking on wood and typing at the same time, wow this is hard) but I have experienced periodic, and seemingly random crashes. Mainly with FCP. Also, 4.5 seemed to just work faster in general. Especially with graphics. Although, FCP does play better with Photoshop (as far as fixing a Photoshop file and it’s re-linking). The best thing I’ve found with FCP so far is it’s re-linking offline media. If you move a project file from one place to another, or change a number of LiveType files, re-linking the offline media is extremely fast.

I’ve used the above method with the 3WCC with over exposed fridge footage and it worked very well. In fact I use the 3WCC for most of my level correction instead of the Broadcast safe filter (which rarely works). And yes, there was some detail in the footage that didn’t appear until after corrected.

August 10, 2005 at 11:13 pm in reply to: Chroma Key troubles

The type of footage you’re using will effect the quality of your key as well as the lighting. DV25 is not that great, DVpro50 is better, BetaSP (for keying) is even better, and Uncompressed will give you the least trouble… as long as it’s lit correctly.

Depending on the type of footage you’re using there are 2 filters you can drop on your footage before the Chroma Key filter; Color Smoothing 4:1:1 and Color Smoothing 4:2:2. Essentially (or at least the way I understand it) those filters smooth out the pixels of your footage so that you can get a better key, easier. As I’m sure you know, the 4:1:1 and 4:2:2 are specific for the footage you captured. Try those and see if it doesn’t improve your key.

I love the presets from MB, BUT on our G5 dual 2gig with 3gigsRAM and 9800SEpro, there very slow. Otherwise worth it.

Thanks for the feedback! I have made a clone of the HD, but haven’t gone through with the reinstall yet. (Need to make sure I have all my programs in order first). I have been going through and doing a complete reorganization of my system; where and how iI keep files. Just to make things simpler and easier. I think it might be a good time to upgrade to Tiger as well. We’re not in the middle of any projects and I’ve saved copies of all my FCP projects.

  • I’ve got Kevin’s book, and it totally rocks! From small things everyone should know (but many times don’t) to very complicated layer effects, Kevin has written about it all. The book is formated in a logical way, and is entertaining as well as informative. Great job Kevin!
