UGH!! Sorry for the double post. I’m putting it down here too for those reading in Thread-view.
—————————————
Floh’s probably right (isn’t he always?) but I have more questions. Will it boot with the card installed if the driver is UNinstalled?
When you were uninstalling / installing the driver, did you get a message reading “Updating Boot Cache” on restart? Because you SHOULD be seeing that. If you’re NOT, then… well… I don’t know what that means but, hold on, Oh GOOGLE!….
OK, I still don’t pretend to know exactly what it means but that’s always been the clue to me whether it was going boot or not.
At the very least this info will likely be useful to the folks at AJA.
Give us a call at Media 100 if you need our help.

I was hoping you’d catch the crossed-fingers thing.
The 6.0.1 driver is the driver of choice for M100 v13.0. Do be sure you pick the one for your particular AJA card: LSe, LHe or Kona3.

Hey Andy,
I assume you’ve come to this conclusion by pulling the AJA card out to get the Mac to boot?
I’ve seen this myself a few times. I’m still not really sure HOW it gets in this state, but I’m pretty confident I know how to get it out.
– Leave the card out
– Boot up
– Run the AJA Uninstaller
– Restart (I think the uninstaller forces a restart. If not, do it anyway)
– Shut down
– Install the card
– Boot up (it SHOULD boot this time)
– Install the correct driver for your card
– Restart while crossing your fingers
– Let us know what happens~Wick

Alex,
One of our engineers has looked at the code and says that you may have indeed discovered something out of whack. We’ll be able to find out more on Monday and will let you know.
In regards to Michael’s HDx-related ruminations, it’s not about the software, it’s about the hardware. HDx has fundamental limitations that the AJA hardware does not.
This has the potential of becoming one of those crazy conversations where everyone thinks their on the same page but are really talking about different things. I have found that simply listing bullet points is the easiest way to address subjects like this.
– Media 100 running on HDx hardware CANNOT deal with progressive frame rates of any kind, even with v13. This dictated by the hardware.
– Media 100 running on AJA hardware CAN deal with many progressive flavors of video. Also dictated by the hardware.
– Currently, there is no version of Media 100 that can convert frame RATES (this includes Interlaced to/from Progressive). This is confused the “PSF” flavors which are really interlaced clips being treated as if they were progressive. They will often appear to play to an interlaced monitor or record to an interlaced format just fine.
– Depending on the model and hardware along with exactly what it is that you’d like to do, Media 100 CAN convert frame SIZES.
– All models (including Producer) can up and down-convert frame SIZE using the Conform feature.
– SDe (based on the AJA LSe card) does NO real-time up or down convert.
– HDe (based on the AJA LHe card) can do real-time down-convert from HD to SD on both input and output but CANNOT “cross-convert” (1280×720 to 1920×1080 or vice versa) in either direction.
– HD Suite (based on the AJA Kona3 card) can do it all where scaling is concerned. Up and down-convert on input and output, cross-convert in both directions and even real-time letterboxing of 16×9 SD to 4×3 SD.

Hi Birgir,
As I was typing furiously, it did occur to me that language may have been an issue. Sorry for the rough response.
Hmmm… I’m trying to figure out how to answer your question without giving too much away.
We DO get stuff in advance, but they (AJA, Apple, etc) have their own issues and concerns and will often pull something at the last minute for stability reasons.
In fact, there is a change in the v6.0.2 driver that AJA has been trying to include for us for most of this year. They had to keep pulling it (understandably) because it was causing problems on the FCP side.
More than a few times, these sort of last-minute changes have surprised us so we try to be a bit cautious about new releases.
Another thing for us to consider is that we don’t want to be throwing updates at our users every other week. We always have other stuff we’re working on (bug fixes, performance improvements, feature tweaks) and we’d like to include them along with things like driver compatibility all at once if possible. So in this case, we’re not ONLY concerned with the new driver, but all the other “new” stuff as well.
Love the video. You sure know how to distract an American. Just show him a bunch of crashing, burning cars with lots of dirt and a rockin’ soundtrack!
btw:
What version of M100 are you using?
What do you do with it mostly?
and
What else do you use?~ Wick

Really Birgir? You signed up on the Cow just for that?
Well then, I’ll take the opposite approach from Floh and assume that your question is a very serious one. Not that I owe anybody an explanation, but hey, it’s the Holidays so… what the heck?!
We’re “slow” because we want to ensure that the software we release (the software we have control over) works correctly with the software that Apple and AJA release (software we do NOT have control over).
We realize that our customers aren’t using Media 100 to make home movies and “funny” videos to post on YouTube. Most of them use these systems to put roofs over their heads and food on the table. The stability of their systems is important to them, and thus, it is important to us.
I had hoped to release an update last Friday, less than 24 hours after AJA released their new driver, but it just wasn’t in the cards. The only thing worse than not being “up to date” would be to push everyone to a new driver and version of Media 100 too soon only to ask them all to back up a few days later and try again.
I’ve been doing this long enough to know that people were going to start asking about the new driver so I thought I’d get a jump on the questions and let you all know what we’re up to.
I’m assuming that your tone may have something to do with frustration regarding “The QuickTime 7.5.5 Problem”: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/4/862351#862351
This problem frustrates us too, but not probably not for the exact same reasons. Let me say it again… Media 100 CANNOT change QuickTime. QuickTime caused the problem and only an update to QuickTime can possibly solve it. While I’m on the subject, just in case you missed it… QT 7.5.7 does NOT solve this problem either: https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/4/862721
There is a fix in the works. Apple has been very helpful considering we are at best a small fish to them and at worst, a competitor. I can’t say when a new version of QuickTime will be released (because I don’t know) but I believe it will be soon.
So Birgir, let me be the first to welcome you to the Cow and thank you in advance for your continued support and interest in Media 100. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

ps: if you’re the upside-down guy on Facebook… I like your music selection (seriously, not kidding) Cheers!

Hi Mike,
I know that I’ve seen CC pass through a Media 100 system unharmed in the past, but I cannot say for sure right now what vintage that system was (M100i, HDx or AJA).
I can give it a try tomorrow.

One other thing to check before opting for the “Nukular” option of reinstalling your OS.
Be sure that you downloaded the appropriate version of QT 7.5 for your particular OS. We have had various reports of bad behavior when users installed a QT intended for a different OS.
-
I’m going to guess that you have QT v7.5.5 installed. Get Info on the QuickTime app to be sure.
If so, the what you are seeing is QT 7.5.5’s inability to correctly play the M100i codec (a variant of MJPEG-B).
The reason the clips play fine in the Edit Suite and Program windows is that the P6000 (or Vincent card) is doing the playback at that point. The poster frames in the bin(s), however, are creating in software using QT player. Thus, the poster frames are no good, but the video is still OK when played with hardware.
So… that’s what’s wrong with your system. Now here’s what you can do about it.
****************************************************************************************
Reverting from QT 7.5.5 to QT 7.5
8.09.18d
———————————————————–
The following procedures are officially unsupported by Apple, Inc. and Boris FX – Media 100. However, if you wish to backup from QT 7.5.5 to QT 7.5, this is the only way to do it as of this writing. You cannot simply downgrade with the QT 7.5 installer, even after deleting the Receipt files from your Library folder.
You can, however, downgrade with a shareware application called “Pacifist”. It is designed to do unsupported installs and anecdotal reports suggest that it works fine with the QuickTime 7.5 Installer.EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!:
Be sure to download the correct QT 7.5 Installer. Running an installer that does not match your Mac OS will result in a Mac that won’t boot! You can download a QT 7.5 Installer for Leopard v10.5 here: https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime75forleopard.html
You can download a QT 7.5 Installer for Tiger v10.4 here: https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime75fortiger.html
You can download a QT 7.5 Installer for Panther v10.3 here: https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime75forpanther.html1- Download the appropriate QT 7.5 Installer – See alert above
• Mount the downloaded Disk Image to reveal the installer package inside2 – Download and Install Pacifist
• Find it here: https://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg
• Mount the Pacifist Disk Image
• Copy the Pacifist folder to your Applications folder3 – Remove the receipts for QuickTime 7.5 and 7.5.5
• Go to MacHD > Library > Receipts and delete the packages (.pkg) for QuickTime 7.5 and 7.5.54 – Use Pacifist to bring you back to QT 7.5
• Launch the Pacifist app
• Click the “Open Package…” button and point Pacifist to the QT 7.5 Installer Package (inside the disk image that you downloaded from Apple)
• Highlight (single-click) the “Contents of QuickTime75…” package in the bottom half of the Pacifist user interface
• Click the Install icon at the top of the Pacifist UI
• When asked what sort of operation you’d like to do, choose to “update”
• When asked about replacing files, check the checkbox to remember decision and then click the “replace” button
• When it’s done, restart the Mac and you should now be back to QT 7.5
