In the long run I will definitely learn to master as many systems as possible. If I was to learn one first, to avoid the confusion of learning multiple platforms, which one should I learn in your opinion?

I’ve noticed Avid is primarily used in the Film/TV industry. Also, I noticed that PP is predominantly used for commercial work and jobs related to the ad industry. Of course PP is starting to be used for shows and films too. Well this seems to be the case in Sydney, Australia.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for stepping in and providing me with some advice – much appreciated.

I’m trying to do a trailer re-cut to upload to YouTube. I noticed that other such trailers exist for the same 90s movie. And, these trailers are in HD – 1080p. The strange thing is, you can’t buy a digital copy of this movie anywhere except iTunes – I searched high and low. Of course, the DRM encryption prevents you from editing it in PP and removing it is almost impossible with an up-to-date mac operating system.

I’m assuming that other such trailers for the same movie are either illegally ripped from the net (not something I want to do and I’m sure Paramount wouldn’t permit this either), or copied from Blu-Ray. So my way forward is to copy a Blu-Ray disc and hope this approach flies.

I have attempted to contact Paramount regarding this but have no reply as yet.

I went ahead and purchased a BDR-XS06T Pioneer Blu-Ray player/writer. It apparently comes with Toast (for macs). Hopefully this will work and if Paramount isn’t happy with my re-cut fan trailer upload (something fun and positive), they will simply request YouTube take it down… or throw me in jail and I’ll get a break form cooking for a while.

By the sounds of it, you’ve had some horrible work experiences. I always thought the film and television industry was full of great people. But obviously not.

Can other editors reading this relate to what Bob is saying?

I know exactly where you’re coming from. I’m actually attempting a mid-life career change – advertising creative to video editor. Advertising was just as challenging to break into to.

The reason I’m aiming for reality television is my background. I understand script writing and storytelling, having spent many years writing TV ads and longer form content. But maybe this approach is wrong. What type of editing role do you think someone with my background should be aiming for? Of course I’d love to edit features, but that’s more of an end goal.

Why the career change? Well, advertising is incredibly ageist – especially in Oz. And editing has always been a passion of mine and I want to enjoy my working life more than I currently do.
