It helps to understand how sound waves travel. If by smaller, you mean further away, then understand that lower frequencies travels further and better through walls than higher frequencies.
So with that in mind, play with the equalizer and start cutting higher frequencies until you get what you like. It may not need to very much either. This also works with vocals.

Have you tried creating a new project and re importing the old project into it? Deleted cache folders?

Is this happening with any particular plugin? I’ve seen this happen with Magic Bullet Looks on my end when using Tilt Shift for example. It will actually log me out completely on occasion. That was on a nMacPro as well.

I think “set to frame size” should work. Just do a test with one of the files.

You could also use audio track mixer window. Use the small arrow on top left to toggle effects, that well you can apply a fill left/fill right to the entire track and mute all other tracks.

Select all the clips, right click modify > audio channels.
Set channels to mono (if you want separate channels), number of audio clips to 2, then check channels 3 and 4.
Note that that this will not affect clips already in the timeline.

The Mac pro has a digital output (combined with the analog out) but I’m not sure what the current support is within Premiere.
The one solution that will work is a USB to multi channel interface. On the high end, you can look at MOTU interface, just pick something that will match your current connections.
