Yes, the client’s ears are usually more forgiving.

There are several DE-reverb plugins out there. I think there’s one in Adobe Audition. I think Apple has one and I use one in iZotope RX.

Hello Michelle and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

It sounds typical of a live event. I’ve heard much worse.

Sounds like some mic was somewhere near a PA speaker and that’s what you got. A de-reverb plugin might help a little. It’s a little grainy around the edges from the distortion in the PA system. Can’t fix the latter, but what do you want to do with it.

In my own experience, the distance from mic to mouth (or lack thereof) plays a very big role in separation.

Yes, you can get cardioid over the ear mics. Countryman makes a nice one. They are usually more expensive than the omnis.

Hi Ben,

G3s with ME 2 lavs and ME66 boom mics are probably the most obvious culprits. The ME2 lav is not as smooth as the MKE-2. The ME66 short shotgun is a student grade mic. The Sennheiser MKH 40 is much smoother. I suggest you rent these to discover the difference.

What mixer are you using?

Thanks for posting. That looks like a nice little film.

Yes, as Eric says, it’s a combination of many things in production and in postproduction.

This piece is well shot and the sound was recorded well. I found myself wondering if the side shots of the car on the road with the field in the background was shot with the car on a process trailer so the cars actual engine was not running.

I’m guessing the boom mic was a Schoeps CMC641.

Hello Brian and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Bruce and Richard have given you some spot on advice (as they always do).

Over the ear mics like the Countryman B6 are great pieces of kit. I have two of them.

They may cause clanky noise problems with women’s earrings, requiring that the earring be removed for the session. I’ve never had a hygiene problem, but it’s probably a good idea to swab each one down visibly before putting them on.

As stated previously, all things being equal, dynamic mics don’t pickup less background noise than condenser mics. A mic over the ear will be closer to the mouth and require less preamp gain than a law on the chest. And if you’ll be running any sort of PA speaker nearby, the lavs will cause feedback problems way before an over the ear mic.

Bruce is correct about RF body absorption. (Never mind what it might be doing to the person wearing the mic!)
