You probably won’t like the answer, but the Sound Devices 702T is smaller than the ones you don’t like.

I think the reason you don’t see a lot of the lower cost devices with TC is the difficulty of keeping the TC out of the audio.

Sound Devices gear is solid as a rock, btw.

Hello Din,

Very weird. The Sony page says no audio input but a mic input. That makes no sense to me.

So the mic input is a stereo 1/8″ TRS?

Well you could use pads to knock down line level to mic level and then get a pair female XLR to male RCA cables and then a Y-cable that has two female RCA jacks on one end and a 1/8″ male TRS plug on the other end.

I don’t suggest Beachtek. I like the Sound Devices 302, which can be internally switched to mic level out and can take mic or line level XLR inputs. At the output of the 302, you’d use the pair of female XLR to RCA males and then the little Y-cable.

Hello Nat,

What happens when you normalize your denoised track in Soundtrac? That’ll tell you how well your noise reduction efforts were. 🙂 I’ve been down that road. Apply enough noise reduction and everything gets quiet. When you gain it up, the noise reduction isn’t as much as you thought.

You may have gotten it right. I’m just sharing my past experiences.

Brian’s thinking process is very ingenious and we’re lucky to have him on this board. As I mentioned, the wider the spectrum of the noise and the more it occupies the same frequencies as the voice frequencies, the less effective I expect this approach to be.

Roland used to make a simple outboard denoiser hardware box that worked pretty darn well. The new iZotope hardware and software work pretty well, but I’m unsure how much better they may be than the software tools you already have.

Last thing to try would be to find someone with a CEDAR system and have them do a pass though…oh, right, then there’s the reshoot filter.

I get it. Worth a try, but generators usually spew a pretty wide spectrum of noise. 40 Hz to, I don’t know, up to 1 kHz or more, machinery depending. Anything over 100Hz can get into the voice frequencies.

Hello Grant,

Rodney’s advice is good. I’d add that a Countryman E6 earworn mic would probably get rid of the room sound. I can be ordered with an XLR and/or a cable that will plug into your AT wireless so you can go both ways; hardwired and wireless.

Five years ago these mics drew stares. Today they are part of the scenery.

Yes your approach will create cancellation. If they are in exact alignment and you flop the polarity, the voice (or anything else on the track) will also cancel, no?

How do you keep the voice from canceling?

Generators (internal combustion machines) usually make more than one frequency of noise while running. As a result, reducing just one frequency doesn’t work very well. Soundtrack Pro has a noise reduction plugin. It should be in your FCP suite.

Rx from Izotope works as a stand alone or as a plugin. I’ve had pretty good results with that.

Mr. Fishback has some excellent advice. If you can arrange to desks to make the distance to the students more equidistant AND closer together, your audio job will be easier.

I don’t understand “pin jack.” Perhaps if you give us a link to which camera you’re talking we can help you better. Six in front, six in back and you should be able to cover it with two shotguns.

While having two boom operators would result in the best audio, your fall back position would be to lock down two mics, each pulled back a bit to get half of the students and split each mic to a different channel. I’d prefer hypers like the Schoeps cmc641, but you probably can’t afford them. The Audio Technica 4053a is a good one.
