I did some quick research, and it seems that as of last year Adobe was working on a fix for the problem.
Is it possible that the fix was incorporated in CS6 but not CS5.5? I am pretty sure that CS6 is playing the files fine. I don’t even have to render after running the Warp Stabilizer, which is AWESOME. The Warp Stabilizer in AE5.5 was completely unworkable for me.
In any event, no need for a new computer system, which is good news indeed!
(Also, no need to go around changing file extensions!)

Oddly, CS6 seems a lot smoother at rendering on the fly. Is this possible, or is it my imagination?

I am running into two problems with that approach:
(1) not enough extra frames for fade-ins and fade-outs to latch into.
(2) I am getting confused and cannot find the right spot!

10kb per frame does not seem like a lot to me, but I will take your word for it!
Besides the performance hit, what are the workflow considerations?
On the one hand, I want to see the stabilized video when I am editing so I know what the final will look like.
On the other hand, stabilization seems to depend on where the cuts are made.

I create two backup copies of all imported assets using Syncback.
I rely on the backups to verify that the files have not been damages.
The so-called delta copying method would keep the files in sync using less bandwidth than traditional backups, but bandwidth is not my concern here.
My concern is to have a way to make sure that the files have not been damaged, and once Premiere touches a file there is no way to know.
I come from a photography background, and I use Lightroom which stores all metadata in a catalogue file, or if you prefer in “sidecar files” and doesn’t touch the underlying photos.

I am a little bit confused by how the link between PP and AE works.
If I stabilize 5 clips, do I need a separate AE project for each clip?
If I update the Warp options in AE, how do I make the update showup in PP?

I closed out of AE and now the clip in PP is “Offline”. What do I do??

If I stabilize a clip, and then trim the clip afterwards, how do I get Premiere and AE to re-evaluate the cropping? For example, if I cut out a very shaky part of the clip, less cropping will be required but Premiere does not seem to recognize this.
