Interesting, and not unexpected – thanks for the link.
As they say – the nMP worked for some, not for others. I’d quietly predicted that the next release would be a pro iMac, with the same internals then boosted and pushed into a re-worked Mac Pro later in the year. If the iMac can have increased RAM and GPU, it would be a formidable machine.
I can’t say I’m surprised that they are taking time to get it right – until someone flatly says that the new Mac Pro is totally incapable of working with high resolution footage and isn’t good enough to do its job, its worth waiting to release something truly special.

Enormous thanks for suggesting this book – downloaded and I’m well into it now, and engrossed. It’s fantastic, in the same vein as easy riders raging bulls and down and dirty pictures.

I’ve just noted on another forum that the akitio e-GPU thunderbolt 3 device is going to be Mac compatible with an update to the range in the next month, meaning you can pair a high spec GPU with the new MacBook Pro for high resolution projects. Cool.

Wrote first 3-4 versions of premiere himself and then left to join macromedia. Macromedia took an age to release their first video product that he was building and in the meantime Apple bought them, which meant his work went into producing final cut.

New Mac Pro, 8 core, 64GB Ram, d700 GPU and a blackmagic ultrastudio 4k via thunderbolt 2, all media on gtech studio xl at raid 5 via thunderbolt 2. Using Red epic-w raw media in 4K, performance is ok in FCPX. JKL is sluggish and stutters. same footage as prores LT, performance is snappy and quick. JKL is ok, but not as good as via hdmi. Anything above 4K, performance with Red footage slows to a crawl. With prores, audio sync via playback out of a separate USB audio I/O device is fine.
In premiere cc, Red media doesn’t play at realtime via same device. Frame rate suffers unless quality is dropped to 1/8, which leaves it almost useless as images are blocky and poor. With prores, performance improves but not as snappy as FCPX. JKL with prores has stuttering performance in reverse. With premiere, audio sync is lost – weird and frustrating – means we can’t output a 10bit image with audio sync via an external audio device in premiere. Hdmi is much better.
I/O performance needs to be better via thunderbolt with raw, and with prores – agreed. Perhaps expectedly, best performance is found with davinci, especially when you customise your Red debayer settings.

For everyone else, I’d love some specifics. Features, products, hardware, software, customer communication, third-party partnerships, adoption of industry standards — name it. The sky’s the limit.

Right, to start off, I’d like to see some Apple manufactured displays that are available for use with MacBook Pro or Mac Pro that get up to and beyond 5K in HDR. The quality of Apple displays in the past has been incredible and having thunderbolt 3 pass through would be great.
It would also be really nice to see a new iPhone released that can playback VR footage, and an apple headset for this, or, a custom apple VR device. Some of my colleagues that previously were Apple loyal have moved away to use google or Samsung because of their VR support.
A new Mac Pro which has incredible performance, both with ultra high resolution HDR footage, but also for use with some of the most intensive processes around, like filmed VR content. Whilst on this note, having the ability to use thunderbolt 3 to add extra GPUs to offload some of the necessary compute power for these tasks. It would also be really cool to be able to specify RAM way beyond 64GB.
Software wise, if apple released a piece of software that did what Photoshop does, but works better with FCPX that would be awesome (it is still baffling that psd files cause issues in Premiere Pro), along with the fantastic updates to FCPX that have been forthcoming in the last couple of years.
Largely fanciful and unfinished but that’s pretty much how most of my thoughts are with a 4 month old at home.

When I first heard about this tool, I thought it was going to open the door to some really cool text scanning/subtitle generating/audio matching magic, but if it is just having a pdf open in a window within premiere surely its just as easy to have acrobat open while you edit? I’m not criticising, I’d love to know if there is anything more this can do than just opening the pdf in a window? I’ve always preferred a printed copy to sit making my own doodles and notes on, but if someone developed the ability to scan a script for keywords, generate basic subtitles, add markers for scenes etc, I could see this being a really cool addition….
