> Rendering a RAM preview at a lower quality, eg half or third, doesn’t seem to help much.
That would have nothing to do with it if the problem is pushing pixels to the screen. Even if After Effects renders a much coarser image, a 1920×1080 frame still has the same number of pixels to be pushed to the monitor.

If you’re pushing a lot of pixels to an external monitor, the bottleneck can be the connection between the computer and the monitor. This is not a matter of RAM. How is your monitor connected? What are the pixel dimensions and frame rate of what you’re trying to preview?

That is almost certainly a bug in an incorrectly written third-party effect plug-in. What third-party effects are you using in this composition?

First, projects do not have a length. Compositions do, though the term used in After Effects is ‘duration’. You can change a composition’s duration in the Composition Settings dialog box.
