The codec doesn’t matter. Even the RAM preview set at 1/4 will not render. Turned the bluring down to 2 samples without result. In my latest example the comp renders until just before the y rotation reaches 90°.

Shared the project with another editor who questioned the machine. He also experienced the same problem with this comp. I am wondering if I have something set up wrong & since it seems consistent with me & the problem can easily be seen by others when they load my project. Yet no one seems to be bitching but me.

Been through the usual “fixes” that are generally effective in SD including memory & Open GL. After Effects seems broken in HD. I’d be glad to share a simplified version of the project that demostrates how a simple 3D text layer with a 2 keyframe, 15 frame, y rotation will render out all the way until just prior to 90°. There are no sources in this & no solids, just text, a light, & a camera. It is just one one a long line of render issues I’ve had with HD in AE, but maybe they are all related.

I run into this all the time in CS3. I believe there is a serious memory leak in CS3. I notice after working for various amounts of time I will get this error. I, too, have tried every combination of RAM cache setting I can think of & purging the cache & emptying the cache, ect. Over time it simply fills up. Eventually even clearing the cache will not help & the program MUST be restarted.

To further complicate the matter & alienate me from CS3, is the fact that the problem extends to renders. God help you if you work in HD 1920x1080i. Turn on 3D layers & a single light & roll the dice if it will render a single frame. I have 4GB of memory but that is useless since AE only can use 2GB no matter how many gigs you have.

I have an HD comp with 7 3D layers, 1 camera, 1 light. This is a precomp I’d like to use. It’s not complicated at all. Basically it is 2 1920×100 psd files, 1 720×480 psd, 4 solids, the camera & the light. With shadow cast enabled it cannot render a single frame. Turn off shadows & I can get through a second or so before failure. Restart another few frames & so it goes. Turns out I don’t like it without the shadows & now must keyframe back in the shadows. This turned an afternoon into 2 18 hour nightmares. I’m questioning AE as a HD tool. I don’t have the fastest machine but I think I have a decent machine. A Dell 4600 with 4 GB RAM.

If anyone can think of something I’m missing I’ll try anything. Right now I am looking at redesigning entire projects as I move forward to avoid lights & cameras. Adds a hell of a lot of work faking those things & they don’t look as good.

Interesting that you cannot reproduce this. I can easily reproduce this on any one of the 5 systems I regularly work on.

I am using software Media Composer 2.7.7 Boris AVX BCC4.

Apply BCC DVE Basic effect to any clip. (I normally apply to imported JPG, TIF, PNG, or PSD files, but it doesn’t matter.) Then I pull my crops in as needed, turn on Motion Blur, select only 1 kayframe & move it (rotate, scale, or Z) & bam the image is distorted.

While walking through this myself to make sure I was accurately describing things I found the critical combo is Motion Blur, Crops, & movement other than crop movement. I discovered that the crop control is warping the image as I move it around. I had thought drop shadow was involved but it is not.

When motion blur is combo’d with a crop & movement the image will warp with the crop movement.
