    Thank you for the reply and apologies for the wrong terminology.

    Funny, I was trying blend modes for the layer, but hadn’t looked in the mask portion of the time line. Now that I found it , yep it works.

    I’m not trying to accomplish much but learn After Effects :). Been mostly working with the Meyer’s book. I was going back and reviewing some material and got caught on this issue. However, I’m always open to hearing about a better way. I imagine there must be someway to create an alpha mask in the text layer, just can’t think of how to do it in AE.

    Okay , finally got the import working. My 3D program was disabling certain things in the final render that I’m guessing AE wanted.

    Yep, thank you. I discovered that a little while ago. The reason I didn’t notice it before was in the manual it leads you to the trimmer and using the ctrl or alt drag. What is really required is just dragging it.
