    I tried a Rubik’s cube once with Lightwave 3D, using dynamic parenting. Even with that, I eventually had to fake it as Mylenium suggested. What a pain.

    Try effect>stylize>CC Kaleida in AE 6.5.

    2D layers that are between 3D layers “break” the 3D effect. Move the 2D layer so it is above or below the 3D layers, not in between.

    Nulls can also be used to hold expressions that refer to other layers.

    Nulls are always used in conjunction with other layers to execute some sort of animation technique. One exception might be a spacer layer in the timeline, named “———–” to better organize the layers therein.

    You know … maybe you should drop something heavy with a tracking marker at its center, shoot it, then track it in AE and make the falling object layer follow the track. Tweak to suit.
