Certainly worth a try of the 30 day free version. Some people pick up Avid very quickly and find the keyboard workflow better than FCP and PPro’s tactile workflow.

I started editing on Avid when the first ones came into the UK, I used it for a number of years but since switching to FCP, Avid feels like editing in handcuffs, but that’s just a personal opinion 🙂

However I think it’s only going to consolidate it’s position as the standard in the higher ends of the industry, despite Adobe pushing hard.

I think that Apple are simply letting the top end go, they clearly have a strategy and FCPX is moving towards whatever their vision of the future is. I honestly don’t think that film and mainstream broadcast editing is something they are targeting, that much is obvious.

Just use the “position” tool (shortcut P) for moving clips, and overwrite for all your edits, this makes FCPX behave like FCP7 and takes the magnetic timeline out of play. As soon as you use the “select” tool (shortcut A) and move clips then the timeline will ripple with all your edits as you have found.
