Yes, I’ve tried that several times. Luckily, the offset appears to be consistent ovder the entire file. So pushing the video ahead by 20 frames solves it. The frustration lies in simply not knowing how it happened. I don’t like loose ends.

On starting the project, I select the Panasonic Widescreen 48kHz preset. And then, well, that’s it. I import. Under Project Settings > General, I get this:

Editing mode: DV Playback
Timebase: 23.976 frames/second
Pixel AR: I change this to NTSC Widescreen 16:9
Fields: Progressive
Display format: 24 fps timecode
Audio sample rate: 48000

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the link. I tried it and it seems to work when I break up the files into smaller ones. Takes forever, as expected. I just hope I didnt loose any quality in the process.

I dont know what a Matrox Axio is (capture card?) I just told the guy at the transfer lab to try and use a DVCPRO50 codec because thats the format I shot with. Thought it would save quality and space. I later found out that I should not have mixed a Panasonic shoot with a Microsoft post-production. They dont get along, apparently. I clearly have a lot to learn.

Incidentally, the guy captured on a Mac, then transfered to a co-workers PC, then to my NTFS hard disk. Maybe his FAT32 drive had something to do with it.

Now if I can just figure out why my sound is out of sync and why the fields appear to break up whenever an actor shakes his head. How I long for my old Arri 16mm and optical printer.

The drive is formatted NTFS, as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Another thing that might be of importance is the codec involved: Matrox dvcpro50.

Let me steer this in another direction: Is there any software that could convert my AVI files into a bunch of TIFF files? I bet that would solve it.

I’ve put the new hard drive inside the machine.

Here’s my question: What are the possible reasons why Premiere will import small 3Gb AVI files, but not larger ones? The error message is this: “Unsupported format or damaged file”. Since the small file imports without problems, I know that the format IS supported. Since the ALL files open in other applications, I know that the file IS NOT damaged.

Done. I got a spanking new 250Gb USB drive hooked up. It was sitting on the desk, waiting for a special occasion. Now then, how can I hope to import my 11Gb avi file into PP 1.5?

So I have a single hard drive (C:) with a partition on it. Premiere is installed on C, while I’m saving my project files on the new partition. Plenty of room on either partition.

Any help is greatly appreciated, even though I know everyone is sick and tired of newbies flooding forums like it’s amateur hour at creative cow. All I need is a quick idea of where I could start my research in solving this issue which, to the untrained eye, really appears to involve file size (the only difference between files that open, and files that don’t, is size.)

I should have mentioned: my editing experience is limited to flatbed Steinbecks. So some of your lingo goes over my head slightly.

System: Windows Xp – 2 GHz – 3Gb RAM – GeForce FX 5500 256Mb – PP 1.5.

Project settings? When I start a project, I simply chose Widescreen 48kHz. After that, I try importing. Works fine with small files that were captured at the same time, same place, same settings. Also worth mentioning, these big files open without difficulty in other applications, like Media Player Classic.

I actually did try it with Premiere Pro 1.5. No good. Always the same result: Good sound, white screen. Time code is there. I’ve come across a dozen “white screen” problems on as many forums. One guy solved it by turning off DirectDraw in Quicktime. Another guy solved it with Mainconcept’s DVCPRO codec, as opposed to Avid’s. Another guy solved it by… well, you get the picture. There appears to be as many solutions as there are cases of it. Unfortunately, none of them apply to mine. Seems to be very, very case-specific.
